Stuttering when movie is ripped

I'm experiencing stuttering of the picture and audio when ripping.

I re-author just the main movie to a hard drive file for playback as an mpg, deleting the other files that are created.

I have so far eliminated the following by using different drives/versions etc.

DVD drive
Hard drive
DVD shrink V3.17 and 3.2
Stopped anti virus and spyware programs.

I don't experience this when playing back a movie from DVD which to my mind eliminates other hardware.

I'd really appreciate any other suggestions.
