In the article I read at IGN it states it is not compatible with FF Online because it does not support HD's!

They are going to have to release an external harddrive if they are to release it in the USA and Japan.

They are planning a USA/Japan release of this machine, however, all indicators from Sony are that they simply no longer support new HD installs. The only game that supports it (Final Fantasy XI) isn't a stellar hit like it was expected to be although it seems to be doing somewhat well. All other HD enabled games had that feature stripped out prior to being shipped to the U.S. (Ace Combat 4 and Final Fantasy X for example). Sonys still says that they'll support existing HD customers, however, it seems that they no longer wish to market the HD in the USA/Europe possibly due to piracy concerns as well as a result of HD Loader/Advance.

thats gay i luv that design but i aint gettin it for that reason there killen themselves the hd helped out so many games for ex. re outbreak alot and ifu got hd loader look at crash bandicoot wrath or cotext hardly anyload times and this hd loader may make itr easier for piracy but it made me buy another ps2 for it... so its helping them more then its taking business away!

A notebook hdd woild be pretty lame actually due to the low rpms and the high cost of laptop hard drives.
Just my 2 Cents

There already is a USB hard drive marketed for the PS2. At Toys-R-Us, when marketing FFXI there was an external enclosure for the hard drive of the ps2, sold by sony.
