Computer Not Recognizing DVD-RW Drive

Ok, I have an unique problem (I think). I have a Sony Vaio RX580 and I have a DVD-RW drive (Pioneer) that came with it. The system will not recognize the drive. The name of the drive is DVD-RW, however the type is CD Drive. I can burn pictures and CDs to CD-RW discs, but when I put a DVD-RW in, the drive makes a terrible sound and the computer does not recognize it. I have tried to get help from Sony, but nothing. Can anyone help me?

NeeNee,

You say your drive was a - Sony ?

What about your Pioneer ?

What is your Pioneer doing ? If your Sony is: "making sounds", that's not usual, is it possible it's going "Belly up/"?

You should try checking your drivers, uninstalling your drive and having your PC reinstall it and see if it can find it again.
Make sure your DVD burner is set as a primary not a slave -

Also make sure you're set on DMA and NOT PIO mode in your IDE advanced settings -
