I've got a problem with my write speed on my burner. I've got a Sony DW-D18A that I've put inside a IDE to USB external box. My HP laptop comes standard with USB 1.1 so burning was extremely slow (about 0.3x when set to 1x or 2x). I knew the problem was that a USB 2.0 device was hooked to a 1.1 bay, so I purchased a USB 2.0 PCI card.

It is powered by a DC cable that is hooked into the USB 1.1 bay, and then I have my IDE to USB device plugged in to the new 2.0 card.

I had no issues attaching a HDD to it, but when I attach the DW-D18A it still only writes (maybe reads too, I haven't ripped anything since getting the 2.0 card) at extremely low speeds. However, if I open my email client or pull up other programs while burning, the write speed will jump up to whatever I set it at, (from 0.3x up to 2.0x)!

So how can I fix this? A setting I must toggle on the drive or in the USB drivers? DMA is on, but I don't think it makes any difference since I'm attached via USB.

It also appears that the 1.1 bay is supplying the 2.0 card with enough power to run the burner and HDD.

Thanks in advance!
