Well, I got up today and I just felt like the time was right to buy a modchip! (Ok it also helped that one of my roommates just bought one for his xbox hehe). So I burned a copy of one of my favorite DVD movies and popped it in my (old) V1 PS2 to make sure the laser could read it properly (as was suggested on this board) and luckly it worked great. So I got online and ordered up a Matrix Infinity from foundmy.com and then some additional soldering equipment (a "friend" of mine decided he'd use my last new soldering iron to remove the warts on his feet and ended up breaking it). The only thing I couldn't get that I wanted was some flux paste. But I might swing by the local radio shack to see if they have any or I might just forget it.

Anyway, it should all be here in a few days. I grabbed some old RAM sticks from work to practice soldering on (the pins on the ram chips are pretty tiny). So, with any luck (and a few days worth of practice) I should be booting up some backups and unlicensed code by next weekend :-)

I remember seeing some links on this board to some pages with tips on installing your own modchip. Anyone have those handy?

So, I've just about got everything I need and I'm starting to wonder. What are the chances of actually killing the PS2 during the install process? I'm a perfectionist by nature and intend to spend LOTS of time on the soldering job and quadruple check every joint before powering the PS2 on. IS there any chance I'm gonna kill my PS2?

my friend killed his ps2 while trying to install a modchip, but as long as you have a steady hand i dont think it should be a problem.
