Try DVD -R and let see what happend.
BTW need more info on:
- Your burner brand & model
- The s/w you used to burn
- Your media code
The more info you gave the easier for 'Dawnner' to figure out your problem.

It's a normal case with dvd/vcr combo, that is the way that your unit design to do. That why Dawnners back up dvd on PC.
(Or you can move this question to another boards to see if someone have an idea to hack it)

Hardware:
I have an old Sony DRU-510 (4X) , and Pioneer DVR-108 (8X) both install on my PC, both burners run flawlessly. But, I strongly recomment Pioneed DVR 108, this burner covers all the base, opps I mean all the medias that you put in the tray, and this burner has the new technology on the liquid lazer beam? that 107 dont have (read the burner spec)

Software:
Decripter and DVD-Shink that are all s/w you need. These s/w are download free from this web-site.
