Another newbie to video capture.

I have been converting DVD to VCD for a couple of years, and DVD to DVD for a couple of weeks. I need to start converting VHS to DVD asap, as I have a butt-load of Star Trek originals that I need to get rid of, but don't want to lose the episodes (I know it's Illegal - if it bothers you: Bite Me!)

I have a Sony Viao laptop and a cheap VHS recorder with a Scart and a mono AV output. I want to convert either to DVD or VCD (I don't mind), but I need hardware and software recommendations, as well as a guide on how to. I have USB 1.1, 2.0, and Firewire inputs.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
