Old PS2 Crapped Out Buying New.Questions I have.

Well my Ps2 finally crapped out after many years of use and abuse. Getting a new one and was wondering if anyone could point me to a sight or can write a blurb about the interaction between the Magic V chip and the PS2 hard drive. Can I boot backups with the hard drive in? Was a real pain with Magic 3.1. Not worried about online play as I always use my originals for that anyhow. I would pick another chip, but if the Magic V is good, then I would prefer it as we have an installer local and I can have my new chipped PS2 in 24 hours with no worries about technical problems and shipping back to online suppliers.
