Hi there all. I am brand new to this. I just bought a sony mini DV camera and a new computer and want to download the video to my hard drives and then edit it to DVD to send out to friends. I figured that SONY VEGAS was a good, low end way to cut my teeth on the process before investing in more expensive software, and I am having a problem capturing video from my camera to Sony Vegas.
Camera: Sony DCR-TRV70
SYSTEM: AMD FX-53 on Asus A8V deluxe with 2 15K SCSI Hard Drives
When I hook the camera to the computer with USB and try to capture, it recognizes the camera and begins capturing just fine...I can see the video in the preview window playing. When I hit stop, I get the error message "failed to capture. The file is an unsupported format."
However, when I then go to "MY VIDEOS", the file is there, saved as an .AVI file, and will open with MEdia player, real player, etc...but when I try to import it into VEGAS, I get the "Unsupported format" error.
Sony tech support said that this is because I am connected via USB and not firewire (but that seems to not make sense because VEGAS recognizes, controlls, preview streams, and records the video to the hard drive...it just wont open the files).
So I connected via firewire like they told me to, and now I get the "Failed to capture...unsupported format" error at the beginning of the capture process and it won't capture at all.
Sony tech support had me try to capture video to WIndows Movie Maker to see if it was the camera, and Movie Maker records it as WMV just fine. So, SOny tech support said that the IEEE 1394 port that I am connecting to on my motherboard is incompatible with the software, and I have to go out and buy a special DV capture card.
Now, all of my PCI ports on my rig are taken up...I don't have room to put another card in there without disabling other functions on my machine...
So my question is: Is sony tech support right...is there a known compatibility issue with the IEEE ports on the Asus motherboard?? Is it something to do with my SCSI hard drive??
If it is, am I better off going out and getting another program that will work without buying a new card, or do I have to get a separate DV card no matter what?
If it would be better to get new software, what would you guys recommend??
Thanks for your assistance...any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!!!
