Does ANYONE know where a person can obtain Dual Layer Media for a decent price? I mean, 10 bucks a disc is a bit "Pricy"! All answers are appreciated!

I've seen them for $14.95 Australian, in a electrical suoperstore. That's less than $10.00 US.

Oh, and if you were really daring, you could always go the ebay route. Search for something like "dual layer dvd media" and you will come up with a ton of results. The shipping is usually quite expensive for most of the auctions i have seen, but there are some deals if you're a risk taker. There is one currently for 5 dvds for $21, but the shipping is $9. At $30 though, would still be the cheapest around.

However, I personally wouldn't do it. Caveat emptor certainly applies. I'll wait till they come down in price...

For the record, here are a couple links that might interest people. The first is to a DVD burner made by Lite-On, manufactured by Sony, which can be hacked to be a dual-layer burner. The cost of the drive is $56:

The next link here is the directions to update the drive to burn dual layer:

There's yet to be a SL to DL hack that's worked reliably.

Keep in mind that one successful conversion doesn't automatically mean it's a good thing for everyone.

To be honest i can't see the point of purchasing a drive to hack to DL.Fair enough if it is one you have already got and you hear it is possible maybe. But to go out and purchase for this reason seems a little crazy. The NEC2500 is meant to be able to hack to DL but as the price difference between that and the NEC 2510 is very little. You may as well pay the couple of pound extra.Has Nephilim points out it may not work for all.So what the point of taking the chance for the sake of a few extra quid.

The logic here isn't so much because I can't afford a standard DL drive, but rather to see if it can be done. If it can, great, an achievement. If not, the expense wasn't much and I give the drive to a family member. The price difference here is about $100 US.

... If you're hacking a SL to a DL here in the USofA, it's got to be for the challenge, because you can get a NEC ND-2510A (DL) for $66 from NewEgg (free shipping) ...

Spot on catfreak it has to be for the challenge as it makes no sense for the price.

Personally i think we will soon see a massive drop in the price of DL media.Looking around the local computer market i saw very little DL media.I asked one seller are you finding it hard to get now and he said no but hard to sell.He had just a few disc's and everything else was single layer.I think the makers will soon realise the consumers are not interested in over priced media. With in the next couple of months it would not suprise me to see prices drop.Lets just hope they all come to there sense's before they kill the DL market before it even got going.

The Drive I mentioned works great as a DL burner. The media now is the only thing holding up the whole show--still a bit pricey. Hope you all are right on the price drop--a little price war would be great right about now.

I agree the hack seems like a bit of work, but I only did it to see if it worked. I will probably still continue to use the tried and true Plextor drive for most of my burns....

dual layer Q.s

I have the new Nero that came with dual layer burner
Q: Do I need special dual layer blank DVD's? I thought that dual layer technology just uses the same two layers that have always made up a standard DVD.

Q: How can I use Nero to fit, for example, KILL BILL I and II on one DVD. I've tried to fit 2+hrs worth of MPEG2'S on a DVD+R already, it said there wasn't enough space.(but that it WOULD fit on a "DVD 9" ?

Q: What is a DVD-9
Thanks for your time. Jim

Yes.

DL has been a standard for commercial DVDs but until recently the only blank media available has been SL.

The standard version of Nero that came with your burner won't be able to do that. To fit both Kill Bill films on a DL blank you'll need to use a ripping/compression app such as DVD Shrink to get rid of the copy protection and compress the films to fit a DL blank since both of the originals are DL themselves.

The time length of an MPEG is irrelevant, it's the file size that matters. A 2 hour MPEG that uses low bitrate/quality is going to be considerably smaller than a full quality 2 hour MPEG.
