Okay, so, I'm a new PS2 owner, I have deduced it is a version 9. Works like a charm thus far. Essentially, I'm looking in to the modding options of course, and wanted to get a feel for a few of the chips out there/alternate solutions...

-Slide card/swapping, as illustrated by what's available here: http://www.gocybershop.ca/customer/product.php?productid=151&cat=0
Does it really play everything etc.? I'd done some searching and seen a few people express disgruntlement with this option.

and of course, the myriad of modchips available... to make a long story short everyone's recommending the DMS3 Plus or the Matrix Infinity so it seems. Both look to have all the bells and whistles thought possible... what about the other offerings available though? From my searches I've seen many people state in no such short words that the Neo12 is a piece of junk, but what are people's thoughts on the Magic/Messiah offerings? (further, what IS the magic offering for a v9 ps2?! I saw a couple people mention the 5k6 is nice but isn't that only v10 compatible?)

Yes, I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron and have no qualms performing open-heart surgery on my ps2 ;) Just figure the slide-card - albeit a slight inconvenience when playing games - won't void the still-active warranty and if it works well, it's cheaper compared to the fancier modchip offerings. :)

Thanks in advance for the help, and putting up with a repeat of this thread type :)

if your going to go the swap magic route, get the fliptop instead of the slide card. BTW, fliptop and swap magic has loaded every game i have tried.

I dunno, I'm a bit iffy on that... searches I've done have told me a lot of people have laser issues after installing the fliptop? anyone else recommend it/pan it?

if you screw up your ps2 while installing the fliptop, your a dumbass. The slide card is much more likely to break your ps2.

Before you go calling people dumbasses, keep in mind the fact that there are plenty of ways to mess up many simple things in life. :P Besides, I'm not talking about messing up the PS2 while you install the fliptop, I'm talking about the usage of the fliptop being much more harsh on the life expectancy/condition of the laser. :P

seriously, if you get a fliptop, you will see what i mean. The fliptop changes the ps2 in no way, the only thing that effects the laser is using dvdr media, especially cheap dvdr media.

I agree with sly_61019 the fliptop is the safest. If you are talking about usage wise. Then the swipe card is the method that will give you damaged results. The way it is used is critically,it sticks in between the disc tray.If you keep moving it back in forth, the PS2 has a white pin.Which you can easily break, and it also does damage to your disc drive.I have done the swipe card, fliptop, and am learning soldering right now.I am trying to get a modchip, but I want to know how to solder before going any further with it.If you don't know what you are doing you can damage your console this way also. The flippy is the safest, and like sly said you can boot any game with it.I haven't had any problems with it,and definately no damage issues with it.

Thanks for the input, appreciate it. I don't agree with the dvd-r media damaging the laser statement.. maybe I come off condescending by saying this but that's kind of silly. :O Why would cheap dvd-r media damage the laser in any kind of DVD-ROM drive? The only thing that would get damaged is the dvd-r media itself from the re-seeks the drive would have to do to read the info off the disc... ANYWAY, What I had read regarding the flip tops is that they expose the interior to a lot more dust (which definitely will eventually cause you to have to at least wipe off your laser.. ;) ). Good to hear that that they're a better alternative to a swap card itself however. No one's answered about the mod chips yet! D:

let me rephrase that, cheap dvdr media makes the dvd-rom drive work harder to read it, which shortens the life of the drive.

in regards to the modchips................if your on a budget and dont mind a modchip without the extras go with the duo 2......u can get it for like 20 bucks....it plays dvds, cds without swap, has sleep mode and has online capability. it also works with all versions. u asked about magic chips well the only chip that would work with the version 9 is the magic V i think, however people dont recomend it. if u want to go a little further and pay from 35-50 dollars u can get the dsm3 plus chip. it has all the features of the duo 2 plus u can flash upgrade through cd-r.....i kno it has a few other extra features but i cant remember them of the top of my head.....ok i hope the helped

Well as for the modchip issue.I think it is good to know how to solder a modchip, before even getting one.I think this way for the fact that there are new modchips that come out all the time.If you are positive you can get one that will last a long time. Then I say go with that, but chances are it will get outdated and a newer better modchip will come out, that is when soldering comes into play.If you can solder you can replace the modchip with future upgrade mods.I am looking at the DMS4 and the Matrix Infinity mods, but am curious to which one is better.I am thinking the DMS4 is gonna be better since the modchip has been out longer than the Matrix Infinity.I am sure they have worked out all the flaws it has in it,but am not sure as to the auto boot function.I think this is not really new since Matrix Infinity has this, but for DMS this is new.I was wondering are the chances better going with the Matrix Infinity or a DMS4 chip.I can't really answer this, but maybe someone can give feedback on this and tell what the ups and downs are.Anyways the modchips are cool,I am not against them.I am just saying if you do get one,get one with the firmware updates,so you can keep updating it with future updates.
