to any one that can help i would really appreciate it.i have struggled through and got every thing up and running downloading avi's through kazaa then encoding them through tempeng but they play good on my pc but crap on my dvd player,i have mucked around with my settings on tempeng and i even downloaded the plus version but it has made no difference.the quality is not good at all.it's blocky and when the people move fast it becomes distorted,i'm just totally lost .i bought better quality cd's.i thougt maybe my burner but i'v been assured that its not.i burn them at 4 speed.i regularily check this forum for help but just can't master.i have seen other vcds of other peoples and they have been crystal clear.i tick the boxes for noise reduction, sharpen edges, clip frame, colour correction and i do it in pal asi am in australia.i don't know what all the other settings are so i just don't know what next.if anyone can help i say thanks now.maybe someone could share there exact settings.sorry this is so long but i thought it would save all the extra questions if anyone can help.i only have a basic hp setup pc could there be something i need to upgrade.
thanks.

Try the Cinema Craft Encoder. I have never tried it but I hear excellent things about quality from it!

1st I would question the quality of the avi you have downloaded?? I found a lot of the downloaded movies suck in terms of quality. To test things out, take a dvd movie rip it your self and see how that turns out. I have found the tmpgenc to be one of the best out there for quality. Make sure when you do vcd to set the motion precision to 'highest quality'. The conversion is much slower, but the quality is much better. If you can, make a svcd video with the biterates over 2k (2pass) and see how that turns out. You should see the movie turn out great. If not, I would say the avi you started out with wasn't of quality. The pc hides a lot of defects that a dvd player will show. good luck..

I too have had the same problem with my vcds.

Almost all of them have the blockyness somewhere along the movie, and it can get worse until i press pause then start it again.

I havnt put my finger on the cause, it could be my vcd discman's circuitry is cheap, my media is inferior, tempenc sucks, or even my burner. but i doubt that, its a really good one.

Im talking about dvd rips here, immaculate quality that all of the sudden looks like garbage on my vcd player. some vcds are perfect.. i dont understand.
