AR Max EVO playing PS1 backups?

I just got an EVO edition Action Replay, and I've been fiddling with it a bit to see whether I can get it to play PS1 game backups, so far I've had no luck. I don't have the hard drive, and I don't have swapmagic or anything like those, just my action replay. Is it possible for me to get my backups running? What programs/burning software/whatever will I need to make a CD that works?
