Here is what I am trying to do. I have the first two years of MASH dvd's (6 dvd's). What I would like to do is rip each episode and re-encode it to play on a Pocket PC. I have several of the popular ripping tools and I will probably use Windows Media Encoder to encode it to a format suitable for the Pocket PC.
I could probably connect my set top to my video card and just record each episode manually. But is there an easier solution??
Thanks

Don't use WM encoder! Micro$oft is the evil empire.
You can encode the video as mpeg1 and use pockettv to view the result (I think the link is http://www.pockettv.com). You can get a free version of the player from the site above.
1. RIP the DVD using something like DVDdecrypter/SmartRipper (find it on this site).
2. Create a DVD2AVI project file (see guide on this site).
3. Use TMPGEnc to encode to MPEG1 video. There are some helpful tips on the pockettv site for achieving the optimal result. I use 400k-450kbps video with 64k-96k for audio. My pocketLoox can playback 320x240 at 25fps at this bitrate. You may want to reduce the bitrate or resolution should you get frame drops (depends on your PDA's horse power). You'll also need a large CF memory card - I use a 256MB card.
PS: You can also get a divx player for pocketPC. You may want to take a look at it too..
Have fun.

jnihil, thanks for the advice, i'll give it a try. I might have some difficulty because there are six episodes on a dvd, and about 8 vob files. The first vob contains episode 1 and the beginning of episode 2, etc. I guess i'll have to play around with it to see if i can break them up. Probably get some time this weekend.
Thanks again.

Well, you can break up the VOBs per episode. I presume MASH episodes are half-an-hour long, so that shouldn't be hard to do via DVDdecrypter.
Anyway, the guides on this site and the pockettv site should help. The theory is the same. Just need to tweak the bitrates a little to get your PDA to play it.
BTW, what processor does you PDA have at what speed? My 400Mhz Xscale has a much better mpeg1 playback performance than my old 131Mhz MIPS.

I've read that people have achieved 25fps using the 200Mhz Cassiopeia, so you're probably ok.

i had an ipaq 3650 and used to rip dvds to it.
I did a different method. I ripped the dvds to divx files and then used pocket divx player on my ipaq to view them. by encoding them to divx, you save on file size and get reasonable quality also. this process however does take a long time for each movie, since you rip the video and audio streams and then have to flask it. but to save on the time it takes to process, change the output video size to that of the ipaq screen size.
hope that helps ya out! watching movies on the ipaq is fun and so cool!
