well if you think about it the unit will know that there is being another disk inserted into the unit everytime the lid opens because thats the equilavent of hitting the eject button on the older versions... but as always a new method will come along... one always does.
There's the PS2ownz[.com] tutorial for playing backups with Swap Magic Discs. This is most likely the one/closely related to Sly_61019's. There are many reported problems with the fix. Some say sony might have dev'd some sort of way to figure out when you bypass the lid sensor! They are reporting a successful swap [with SMDs] but when resetting to put in a different game, the SMDs will not work! WoW! I, on the other hand, really don't think Sony is that smart. Hmmmmm. What do YOU think the prob is?
