low low contrast - picture is greyed out - most likely culprit is a codec, but WHICH ONE??

ok so im having this problem with mpegs, avis; every type of video file. every movie i play is really greyish and has a "milky" sort of picture. i know this isn't to do with the overlay controls on my video card drivers (geforce 4 mx 440) because A.) they're set to the default values, and B.) if i adjust the overlay controls, they don't affect the movie. they affect everything else, just not the movie. so i figure it must be some crappy codec i've installed which has bought about this problem, and i was wondering if anyone had any idea which it might be, or how i can find out.

i already know how to delete codecs, as explained in this helpful thread:

(they can also be found in system properties > hardware > device manager > sound, video and game controllers > video codecs > properties)

so i just need to know what codec it is that's causing this shitty low contrast problem, or how i can find out. any help at all is appreciated.
