sony dvd handycam vs movie maker

I can copy my dvd home movies from my handycam to my hard drive but none of the movie makers on my system allow me to edit them. What i would like to do eventually is edit the good bits together and then burn them to dvd's. The problem seems to be the fact that everything works in different formats. I don't know which format to use or which movie editor. I would be very grateful for some help.
