Will XBOX work without locked HDD?

I bought a new xbox hdd and i am not sure if u can lock it or not.. It is a 160gig Buffalo External. The Number is HD-HB160U2 . Will my xbox function without it being locked? I am not going to use it for xbox live.

there are some posts on xbox scene about this exact thing, plus tutorials on how to set up your xbox to read this new external drive as the primary too, it's really cool stuff, and depending on what dashboard you are using, you can lock/unlock it by just picking that off of a list
