vegas will not use files encoded with xvid, and with vegas being my perfered video editor this is a problem as i compress all my dv video to xvid to save space. there are many work arounds the problem, but none really work, so those of you looking for another option, this should work for you. this work around will let you edit the xvid files in vegas, but you will not be able to encode back to xvid, so youll have to choose another format or export to raw then use vdub to encode to xvid. its not a perfect solution but it works. im guessing this work around will work with numberous other programs that dont accept xvid either, such as pinnacle, avid, etc....

this work around is ment to be used in windows xp with divx 5.2 and xvid 1.2

1. install divx 5.2 or better, previous versions of divx are buggy and wont work with some video players. go into configuration and make sure 'generic mpeg4' is enabled.
2. disable xvid. to do this i have a registry file on my desktop called 'disable xvid.reg'. it contains the following text:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
"vidc.XVID"="0"

3. use vegas video with your xvid files
4. after quiting vegas video you may re enable xvid, again i use a reg file on my desktop called 'enable xvid.reg'. it contains the following text:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
"vidc.XVID"="xvidvfw.dll"
