I don't know how much time you have on your hands but you can import them into any video editing software and merge them there and then export the video back out. It may loose a tiny bit of quality and take 8million years to finish rendering and encoding, but u will get the best results that way.

there's a really good one called pecks power joiner.
Software Description:
This is an excellent freeware AVI file joiner that should have no trouble with any of your AVI files. The interface is simple and straightfoward to use. Features include file join order shuffeling, view joined file and delete source files. pop

virtual dub copies the film directly so there is NO loss of quality (hence the name direct stream copy).
not no descernible loss of qulaity, NO loss of qulaity at all.

I tried using VirtualDub to join two XViD MPEG- .avi's, and I got the following error:

"[!] Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video."

Any way around this?

to join the two xvids you WANT to use direct stream copy (which means as it says it merely copies the audio and video stream exactly if you append an AVI then it will join the xvids).

as for the audio in tmpg check carefully that the clip has audio if you are certain it is find out what format the audio is (use a program if you dont knwo what search for it). Then make sure you have the correct codec. If all else fails use vdub and load the original AVI then choose to decompress the audio stream and save wav. Then use tmpg to encode the audio separatly and mulitplex afterwards etc...
