Ok, so I've read every guide, every FAQ, every single thing I can think of before posting this. I am trying to burn a DivX\Xvid .avi to DVD-R (ooh - I know, something different!!) Anyways, I have tried every all-in-one program out there, and while I know there are trade-offs in quality etc, I really just want something quick and (mildly) painless. Here's where I'm at (and yes, I've spent the actual $$ to purchase all these programs, it's been a very expensive week. It will all be worth it if I can make this work.) As far as I know all my codecs are up to date, I've loaded ffdshow, xvid, divx, directx 9.04c and that's about it so far. If you see something wrong with this list please speak up. Also, I know how wonderful TMPGENC is supposed to be, but I don't like it. Please don't suggest I use it. we'll come back to this later. My process that I want is to take my .avi, convert it to vob's etc, then use Nero Burning Rom to burn the movie to DVD-R. Burner is a new Pioneer DVR-108. Here's what I've tried.

1) DVDSanta - sucked. Poor quality, DVD's that I burnt wouldn't read properly in my DVD player (Sanyo 7201). Didn't like this program - TOO BASIC.

2) WINAVI - Worked really well, fast, decent quality, a little too basic (but oh well). The only problem was that after conversion I found that it "missed" chunks of the movie. I'd take a 90 minute .avi, and after conversion I'd only have a 56 min movie left, and what seemed like random pieces were missing. Would not read properly in my player, etc etc. I didn't even realize the problem until I outputted an MPEG-2 instead of DVD files and saw the file length. I really liked this program, outputted a nice file (details: VIDEO: 3.18 GB, 9000 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (2.21:1), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD) AUDIO: 81 MB, 224 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x2000 = AC3 DVM [0x80],Supported) but it didn't always work well. Any thoughts why it was screwing up? If I can get this program to work properly, I may go back to it. This is also the only program I used where I could get audio outputted. It would input in Mp3 and output in AC3, (as well as in mp2, but again with no data.) Now here's another thing - if it encodes with ac3 audion, it all plays fine. My system wil not encode mp2 audio...it doesn't work in any program...thoughts? Or should I stick with converting to ac3 and running with it...

3) NeoDVD - I don't like NeoDVD, and I won't be trying it again. It is cheap, the menu's look cheap, I don't like it. Moving on...

4) Mainconcept 1.4- I really like this program. It gives you just enough settings to play with, you can adjust as you like to adjust, but again, no audio. I have checked my .avi, and the audio (from AVIcodec) is as follows: ** Audio : 94 MB, 137 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 3 (MP3), Supported **. I can transcode the video just fine, it looks beautiful, but it won't do the audio. I don't think Mainconcept can encode to ac3, and as earlier started mp2 doesn't ever work on my system. It doesn't matter what settings I change, I followed the full guide from http://avi2dvd.4t.com/ and did EXACTLY what it told me too, so that I can encode it as .mp2 audio. My main video is all MP3, this is what I would like to use. I have tried doing two elementary streams or doing a single Mpeg2, but neither works. When I do seperate streams, it creates the whole .mp2 file, but it is silent. There is NO audio data in the file. If I could just get this to work, to output audio and then author it I would be a happy man. I have tried everything I could find to make it work, and nothing helps. I am at my wits end. If you see some glaring error, or think there is something I am missing let me know. All through MC I am choosing mp2 audio, and I really don't know what else to do.

These are my main questions..
a) Is there something I'm missing as to why I can't do mp2 audio on my system? Will a burnt DVD video still sound ok with mp2 audio? I have an mp2 codec from ffdshow on my system...should I have a different one? (I must be new...)
b) If I can't use mp2, or if it just sucks, then what should I use to pull the mp3 audio out of the avi, put it into the "right" format (ac3, mp2, wav, whatever)?
c) What is the best program for authoring the new dvd? I am planning on using Ulead DVD MovieFactory... I don't care if these disks have menus (i prefer to just put'em in and play'em actually)
d) Has anyone had this problem with either MC or Winavi? Like I said, if Winavi will work that is what I'd prefer to use, maybe there is a patch or something I am missing? (I bought ver. 5.8)

In advance, thanks for the help, there has been a ton of useful info on this site and it is certainly appreciated, hope I can contribute back one day... I have tried to include as much info as possible, if you need more just ask.
Cheers!
