Ok, I have an unprotected DVD. Haven't been able to burn it with anything - but it plays perfect??? Play it with Power DVD, perfect - Nero Showtime - perfect. Try to copy with CloneDVD, Nero, X-Copy, rip with DVD Decrypter - tried to make an ISO with DVD Decrypter.

I just keep getting errors with all of them. What could be the problem? It plays beautifully, but the rips I've done with DVD Decrypter get a pack header error a couple of times - then go on through and finish, then the file on the HDD plays, but it's "Blocky".

Any ideas?

Thanks,
RushB

Sounds like the disc is damaged to me.Just because it plays well it does not mean the disc does not have a scratch on it.I would look at this possibilty.

Ok, it might be damamged. But if it will play, shouldn't something like X Copy be able to capture the stream and make me a good copy? Is there anything out there that might?

I have trouble thinking that there is no way to copy a DVD that will play properly - just got to figure out how...

Thanks,

Here's what DVD Decrypter gives - those are the only errors - so I would think that the VOB files, at least most, would be ok. But I am no expert - so maybe these few errors can screw up the whole DVD.

RushB,

In DVD Decrypter, under "I/O", "tick" "Ignore read errors".

Rip in Mode ISO, Read then pickup with DVD Shrink, File, Open disc Image the process as usual and burn with DVD Decrypter.

OR before burning, use DVD Shrink to backup the files in a VIDEO_TS folder then play on your HD.

Give it a try - can't hurt -

Thanks, I will try that now. The strange gets stranger though - I can go in and use Power DVD, or Nero Showtime to play the DVD perfect. Play the ripped VOB, the blocks show up.

So I thought, let's just try to play a VOB right off the DVD - blocks show up. So let's take Total Commander and copy the VOB's to the HDD - same thing, the blocks (glitches) show up.

What's the deal???

It made it through DVD Decrypter, made the ISO. Now using DVD Shrink I get this error message:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Programming error - exception occurred.
Not enough storage is available to process this command.

I have two 200 gig Seagates - more than half is free on either one...

Strange.

I guess I just don't know enough about DVD to figure this out.

What is the difference between playing the VOB in Power DVD, and actually playing the DVD? Why would one be messed up, and the other not? If I play the whole DVD it's perfect, if I play just one VOB - any one of the five, it's got "pixelation" (guess that's the right term).

Is there a better DVD player out there than Power DVD - could it be a problem with MPEG2 drivers for it?

Thanks,
RushB

Took the decrypter iso and burned it to dvd for the heck of it - this DVD isn't protected, so no need to shrink really. All the chapters are there, it plays all the way through, but the pixelization is bad. It's jumpy, skips etc. So I have another coaster for my desk...

It just makes no sense, why can I play this DVD perfectly, but copies of it come out screwed up even though there is no protection?

Finally was successful with CloneDVD - just kept hitting retry as it would find an area it couldn't read. Made an ISO that way and burned it - perfect.
