SONY VAIO PCG-GRZ515G DVD-RW dead ?

Hello,
I would appreciate some help on resolving the following issue:
I have a SONY VAIO PCG-GRZ515G laptop with a DVD-RW

I cannot open the drive, and when I do open it manually and insert a CD, it does not react (no light, no sign of life, etc...)

It might have just died on me... but I am hoping for some kind of software problem.

This has occured, I'm pretty sure, after I had some problems downloading new virus definitions...

I do not know what to re-install, or how to go about it since installation or recovery CDs need a drive.

Appreciate feedback.
