playing DVD's on desktop computer

I dont understand. What am I doing wrong. I have a Mad Doc multimedia Dominator 6-in-1 12x dvd +-R +-RW. I have several software that is suppose to play DVD's. I followed all the instruction about no overplaying one software on top of another. I dont know why when I put a DVD in my computer it wont play. The only way I can view some DVD's is through my computer and then open the DVD drive and then it pulls up the files. For instance I was copying a DVD The birth of the V-rod. Well I cant just put the DVD in the computer and watch it. I had to select a file VTS_02_1 and then the nero Showtime let me see it. Strangley enough I some how made a copy of this to a blank DVD. It actually worked on my DVD play hooked to the TV. I am new at this but have knowledge in some of this with photos. slideshows and making DVD's. Gave up the hassel of just using a CD burner. Now that I have a DVD burner not sure its less hassel. Anyways I have the nero 6 Ultra Edition and Nero vison express 2 pops up. I tried using the Window media. All I get from that is the sound. I dont understand the process of just playing a DVD on a computer. How every I can copy a DVD if its not scrambled or protected. Does my nero not have a ripper in it. I tried to copy another DVD and it said protected. Please help very greatful to some knowledge.
