How to add subtitles to an .avi file?

I have an xvid .avi file. I also have two files by the same name with extensions .sub and .idx

My question is how do I add subtitles to the .avi file? What program should I use?

Use Media Player Classic (MPC). Open the AVI, go to View -> Options... Then Playback -> Output. Select VMR7 or VMR9 [renderless] in DirectShow Video.
Then File -> Load Subtitle...
