Ok, I'm a newbie just getting started on all of this. Can I just buy my own HD off of ebay and upgrade it myself? I plan on buying a Xenium chip and installing it also. Is the HD in the Xbox the same as any conventional IBM compatible PC HD? What software will I need in order to make an off the shelf HD work? Where do I get this software?

You can use a normal pc hdd for the upgrade,and if you wanna make it easy....get an autoloader like firefuckers or slayers evox. These disks will load everything you need on the new hard drive.

So is that to say that initially I connect the drive to my home PC then load the software onto the HD and after that it's plug and play to the Xbox? I mean other than the mod chip.

You wont need to hook up to your pc, other than to back-up your original C and E drives. Highly recomended.

Once the drive is replaced then just insert the firefuckers or slayers (thats what I use) disc and follow the on-screen instructions.

I cannot tell you where to find slayers etc.. as I think its against rules but think of a huge star .org.
