USB DVD burner

I have a laptop with a DVD R/ CD RW and i want a DVD Burner, and instead of getting a desktop, i am thinking of getting a USB DVD burner.
Would a USB DVD Burner burn good quality backups? I figured it would because it is best to record at 1X and USB Burners are slower than internal drives, so i thought it wouldnt really matter.
