can you make video clips smaller more storeable?

I have like 20 tapes that i want to take clips from but my harddrive wont hold all of it. Do I have to go throught the tapes and manually take off the stuff I want and save that for later and do that with each tape then burn it? Or is there a way to compress the files to make them more storeable? I know someone elso asked a simmilar question but there was no response and I didn't know if they were asking the exact same thing..
