A great deal of people have experienced problems when copying DVD's with Roxio; Drag-to-Disc just doesn't seem to suffice. However, there is another Roxio application that does work, Creator Classic.

With DVD Shrink, simply backup or re-author your DVD and save to your HDD (don't forget to allow Shrink to create 'VIDEO_TS' & 'AUDIO_TS' subfolders!). Next, simply run Creator Classic and choose a new Data project (there are three in total, data, audio and other). Then import your 'VIDEO_TS' folder and insert a blank DVD+R/+RW disc, or whichever media your writer supports, and click 'Burn to Disc'.

The good thing with a Creator Classic data project is that it sets the DVDs' filesystem to UDF, Universal Data Format, which is the correct FS required for stand-alone DVD players to read. The DVD is now, or should be, readable on any DVD player/recorder!

This technique has worked perfectly for me many a time. Hopefully this has restored some confidence in the Roxio suite.

Hi there linroot,

We have counseled pple to shut down Roxio's "Drag to Disc" in msconfig, as it is the "packet writer" that causes so much of the trouble with apps like Nero Suite.

Put them side by side and here's how I see it, ~ ~>

Roxio Pro:
We have used your method exactly as written and it does work fine allowing pple to use Roxio for their music files (which I truly loved my Roxio for). Indeed if the standalone player is incredibly ancient, using Roxio's UDF mode is great as long as you are burning -R media. It is doubtful that, no matter what the format, +R discs won't be "seen" by older players. Today' that argument is moot as those players made within the past year and 1/2, will play a mushroom pizza if the cheese isn't too thick (Lol).

Roxio Con:
Roxio costs $$$$.Roxio does cause problems with many DVD Video apliacations. Even going head to head as a burning application, Nero (which is none too quick) can out burn Roxio. Roxio cannot interface with DVD Shrink as can CopyToDVD (an incredibly fast burning application), DVD Decrypter (Free) and Nero (which can be used to burn with 2 different burners at the same time, heh, heh).

Well now, we covered that pretty well didn't we ?

I guess I'll end as you began - Roxio is a "problem" child true BUT there's no need in killing him off. If he came with your PC, there's no reason he can't be used to burn DVD's.
No matter what, I do like the way he's setup for MP3 work -

Cheers linroot, welcome to aD :D)

Pete

Hi SubaPete

Thanks for the welcome. So did the aforementioned tactic work for your DVD backups? It should ought to, I've yet to encounter any errors, except when using DVD-R/-RW discs.

Naaahhh, it worked alright but it was too slow a burning app. for me ~

Me, I uninstalled it AFTER I purchased (for hard earned $$$) Easy CD Creator 5 and THEN bought the upgrade for some more $$$$.

I finally stayed with Nero for my CD burning and my multi-burns. Nero is the only app that supports multi-burns using 2 different burners.

There's nothing wrong with Roxio IF you kill off the "Packet writer." To me, it's just not all that great either -

Each to his own - it's soooo good to different flavors of ice cream :D)

Cheers,

Pete

No one's suggesting that Roxio be banned we just don't recommend using it. BTW, most packet writing softwares can be problematic, including Nero's InCD.

Hi

I just wanted to post this as a way around for users of Roxio software. Unequivocally Roxio is by no means perfect, however if you use the correct utilities you'll acchieve the same outcome.

I am afraid that I must agree with pete. Roxio came with my TDK burner and it is a real headache. I never had any conflict issues even when I installed nero with it. It is just slow and complicated compared to nero. I had both in head to head competition and I uninstalled a free copy of creator(full version) and paid for the nero. It does have a good cd burning software though. I must say if it works for you then wear it out!!

I'm also in the Nero camp and feel Roxio Easy CD Destroyer should be banned. ;) I stopped using it after ECDC 5, but heard the same problems existed in version 6. It destroyed my CD drivers (even after uninstalling the ECDC software) and rendered my drive inoperable. Too much of a headache. Nero has been almost flawless for me after I figured out how to use it.

I use Roxio EMC7. It all depends what you want the software to do for you. I use it to do sideshows, edit capture files from my old VHS home videos, edit audio cd's, and a few other things. Nero does not measure up when doing these things.

Nero does great at burning Video_TS files that I have used DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter, to produce. That is all that I have found Nero, better than Roxio.

Guys,

It's a matter of opinion AND what you're doing with the proggys. As GrandpaBW has stated, he uses Roxio for editing audio CD's and IMHO, I think there's nothing better than Roxio for that as that's what I used it for too. Roxio is friendly, easy and designed well for that task. As for slide-shows and editing capture files from VHS tapes, I won't argue as I haven't used it for that. But there's where I draw the line. I did miss Roxio for my CD's but it caused so much trouble for my video work, I didn't mind letting it go. I now use Nero for my CD's But again, my work with music has decreased quite a bit so I made my choice.

There are many proggys out there and it's for a reason. Pple like to do different things. It's folly to say a proggy should be "banned", it's another to say a certain proggy interfers with a certain task. Roxio does interfer with too many video proggys, period and that's my reason for "kicking it to the curb".

and that's my 2 cents -

Pete

Hi

I concur with ScubaPete and this was the exact reasoning for this thread. It's down to personal preference. I have yet to encounter problems with Roxio ECDC6 when burning/copying DVD's, however on the other hand I respect people who have.

As I had read many negative responses as regards Roxio software I wanted to reassure devoted ECDC users that, dispite its flaws in certain areas, Creator Classic CAN be used for DVD backup alongside a third-party application such as DVD Shrink. I have to confess to never using Nero, however as long as Roxio does what I require it to do, is there any need to change?

Hi, I'm a newbie to DVD burning

Ive used DVD Shrink to cut out the non-english audio tracks and have a AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS file. I now want to burn a DVD using Roxio Easy CD & DVD, Creator Classic as you suggest.

What do I do with the AUDIO_TS file pls?

Linroot recommended it, not I. I've deleted it from my PC because of all the headaches it causes -

I don't think Roxio uses the AUDIO_TS folder - try it without -

I suggest that while you're experimenting that you use RW media. It may not play on your standalone player BUT when you feel you've got all the bugs worked out then burn it to single-write media -

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Pete, thanks for the advice.

I've been using Roxio because I've used it to burn CD's in the past.

I did as you advised and burnt 3 DVD's (2 r/w and 1 xread only).

One of the R/w's works after a slowish start (after pressing just about every button on my remote I get the menu screen up) up to about chapter 35 of 38 and then starts "screen fragmenting" and slowing down.

The 2nd r/w and the read only just won't work.

I'm burning on a Pioneer deck and my player is also Pioneer using DVD-RW and DVD-R disks.

In your experience - is it Roxio? or is it maybe a corrupted download file?

I'd appreciate your adavice on what is the best DVD burning s/w you've come across as well.

thank you for your help - as I very much feel I'm learning the hardway and coming across this Forum has renewed my enthusiasm.

SunPaul,

I've been using Roxio because I've used it to burn CD's in the past.

Many, many pple got Roxio with their PC's (me too) and, like you, used it to fry CD's, which Roxio is very good doing. I thought that for music CD's it was quite good, unfortunately it's not that good a burner for DVD's and clashes with many other DVD backup proggys most notably, Nero.

I made my choice as have many others, lose Roxio and keep Nero.

There are some who have no problem with Roxio but their numbers pale when compared to those who can't work with Roxio on their PCs.

As for your problems, they might b caused by using poor quality media though Roxio cannot be ruled out. -

For your education on media, let's start by taking Memorex as an excellent example as DVD media goes, 90% of Memorex, made by CMC, is sub-standard as far as DVD backups are concerned, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Memorex made a name for itself with their magnetic tapes (VHS and audio cassettes) and have been living off it ever since. There are 4 different companies that manufacture Memorex DVD's BTW and product quality varies widely as you might imagine. Only 10% of the Memorex out there, those are discs manufactured by Mitsubishi in the 25-pack spindle, and they're the exception - they are the good ones. It's easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can't be trusted - " Who's making your Memorex tonight ?"

Is it just Memorex ? No ! I just used Memorex as an example, Princo, Orange Pack, Great AZO and most "store" discs aren't all that suitable as a DVD backup media - that's why we are specific in the type of media we are recommending.

1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized by both burners and players :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-(
Another problem which, "Pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error". This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media. *A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case.

Orange Pack, Princo, Great AZO and 90% of Memorex plus many others are just not that good for DVD burning. Those same discs however, are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets and Data..Even DataSafe G04's made by Ritek have been reported as an inferior quality media and are evoking that "Oh no, I shouldn't have gotten those."

What we are suggesting is to download this DVD Identifier to find out who manufactured your DVD and if it's a decent quality.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Once you have your disc identified, click the "More information" icon and see what information you're given. if you're not sure of the quality, come on back and we'll check it out for you -

2. A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! RiData, Sony, TDK, "Branded" Ritek G04's or "Branded" Verbatim Data Life, Verbatim DataLife plus, Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi are excellent bets. Among the better discs we're looking for, any media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" - BUT it must say "METAL" AZO !, this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are just the type of media we're looking for to do our DVD backups, Prices online from Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .45 (USD) a disc -

For DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win BUT the majority lose, they lose varying amounts true but, they still lose :-(

Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.

In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to poor quality control used during manufacturing and the quality of the dye, dye application or composite type used. I'm not saying it won't burn - Some may burn, some may not. It's quality is inconsistent, meaning it's not dependable. To make matters worse, many times the discs that you do burn may play in your PC BUT your standalone player may not accept them - what good then is a backup DVD that cannot be watched on a DVD player ?

When I say "Branded," that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "RiData" on the disc itself. The monetary cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than what you are purchasing now.

We like to verify our information prior to recommending things. There are certain things we look at. For instance, when their dye and dye application are listed as unknown, this almost guarantees us they are using whatever they can get at a cheap price. Companies that use quality materials like to BRAG about it, naming names and staying with quality manufacturers who produce their media.

Using DVD identifier and MediaMatch can help you find out a lot about what you're using. Purchasing your DVD media online can insure that you're getting quality merchandise at a good price. Shopping wisely will save you time, aggravation and money.
Quote:
In your experience - is it Roxio? or is it maybe a corrupted download file?
As I said, it could be either Roxio OR your media, at this point I see nothing at all that could indicate a corrupted file.
Quote:
I'd appreciate your advice on what is the best DVD burning s/w you've come across as well.

For the best burning s/w, I would say CopyToDVD which costs about $30.00 (USD) works "automatically with DVD Shrink as does Nero ($$$$) and DVD Decrypter (FREE).

My advice to you at this time - Give DVD Decrypter (FREE) a try as a companion to DVD Shrink. Here, about 1/2 of the way down the page you'll find a guide with all the proper settings for DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink as well as the download sites for both proggys. -

SunPaul,

If you decide to get rid of Roxio, you'll need this -

Roxio Zapper

Remove all types of Roxio tentacles and tendrils with Roxio Zapper ?

Find it here:

http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip

Once you've done that, reboot your PC to "flush everything out of your PC's system :)
