Hia everyone,

I have been endlessly trying to rip some DVD VOBs via an automated/batch approach. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem is I have some specifc needs/requirements as outlined below:

1) split VOB output by cell-id (to get all titles/chapters in spearate files)

2) demux video ExE0 stream to separate file...either AVI or MPEG-1/MPEG-2 format.

3) demux all audio streams (0x80,0x81,0x82,0x83,...) to separate files, preferablly in MP3/AC3 format. I need to retain all language audio.

4) demux all subtitle/subpicture streams (0x20,0x21,0x22,0x23,...) to separate files. Again, I need to retain all language subtitles and captions.

I tried a whole range of products I had downloaded (some free, some demos) but not that many had commandline support. My findings of these and how they worked is below:

1) SMART RIPPER did much of what I needed, however, the split by cell-id only split the video...the audio and subtitle streams were still one file. I could always get the chapter info (location, length, #frames) and split. However, also only seems to pick out the main movie VOB...I wanted to rip/decode/demux other DVD VOBs as well for menu pics and motion menus as well as extras.

2) DBD2AVI...only seemed to make some project files. Maybe I have the wrong commandline settings here. If someone could help that would be great.

3) bbDMUX...can demux streams but no cell-id splitting. Again, could try and split up later based on chapter info.

4) DecodeVOB...can demux video/audio...but only one audio stream per run and no subtitle or cell-split support

5) VStrip...still experimenting...

6) m2apx3g...no cell-split or subtitle support from what I can figure out.

...was wondering if any of you could provide your experiences with VOB ripping utilities and commandline parameters. I am still trying to figure our DVD2AVI. It would be nice to have all of this in one program and demux all in one pass (all streams) but I realize that I may have to first demux to new VOBs and then try and decode as a second or third pass.

Thanks to everyone...playa.

Your needs are pretty specific, but did you try DVD Decryptor? I am usign command line prompts and I think it may have those capabilities.

Hey, does Smart Ripper actually work with movie files only (I am looking for a command line ripper to rip to the hard drive, but with movie files only to cut down on size.) Also, does smart ripper support compression? Do the command line parameters work well?

Smartripper worked quite well and has good commandline. It can decrypt the cd directly (so no need to decrypt to HDD first with another tool).

On the commandline you have can specifc arguments and parameters for
DVD root,
output directory,
streams to Demux
(F:* for demuxing all streams...a/v plus subs).
file splitting
(by VOB file,chapter,VOB-id,cell-id,max filesize)
key check
(for decrypting dvd)

The only significant problem I found is that it only picks the movie VOB. It automaitcally picks the largest VOB to process as the movie file. So in my case I was missing my extras, menus, etc. which I also wanted ripped.

Smartripper, unlike DVDShink, is not for reauthoring a DVD so you can really burn to a new DVD withou first having another tool to use to set up DVD structure and files.

Thanks bbmayo..."been there-done that!"

I have used DVDShrink before and I realy like it...but needed something else this time around. I dont' want to reauthor/burn a new DVD image.

I need a tool to rip/demux all video, audio, subpicture/subtitle streams, split by chatper/cell for use with other PC software...commandline support would be nice too.

infinguy,
yes, you're right, DVD Decrypter does what I need. Well, at least part of it. I have used this before but didn't realize it has commandline support...and lots of options/parameters. Was able to split by VOB CELL-ID and also Demux some streams. The outfile filenames also indicate if a menu VOB CELL or not.

However, I have a strange problem on one particular VOB. I get a jitter/stutter effect when the VOB/MPEG is played. I tried other VOB utilites and video conversion tools and they all seem to have it also...so nothing particular to DVD Decypter.

I found PVAStrumento and Cvpas (commandline shell) have both a 'demux' and 'make ps' mode. The 'make ps' mode seems to get rid of this video jitter...

So, here's my solution...
1) dvd decypter commandline to strip/rip VOBs direct from DVD and split by CELLID.
2) run ripped VOB through PVAStrumto to get Mpeg. (no jitter)
3) Real (Helix) Producer to convert mpeg to real media (rm)..smaller file size plus still good quality.
