DVD-R media for Sony Dru-710a

I just bought a new Sony dru-710a burner. I previosuly had a Pioneer A05 or something like that that worked great, just burned at 4x, so I wanted something faster and got the Sony today. I have a stock pile of the Memorex 8x DVD-r's, yet even though NERO is telling me it is burning at 8x (11,040KB/sec) I know by the length of time it is taking that it is actually burning at 4x, cause it's the same speed as my Pioneer for the same disk. Anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to make it actually burn at 8x?
