Burn ripped movies onto cd-r?

Alright, so I download movies from kazaa. The movie files are .avi files (divx). I have a cd burner, but not dvd burner (I've heard you can only burn on to dvd-r's if you have a dvd burner) I am wondering if there is any way i can burn these movie files onto a cd-r and watch it on my dvd player (my dvd player plays cd-r, dvd-r, vcd...) Is there a certain format the file has to be in for the dvd player to read the movie on a cd-r? Or does the movie have to be burned on a vcd? I'm pretty new to this so any input would be great.
