How do I use my Panasonic DMRE80H?

OK, I'm stupid! I'm trying to use my DMRE80H to record my old VHS movies to DVD. For my first coaster, I played the VHS tape on a VCR, to my ADVC100; analog in, digital out, to bypass the macrovision protection. The output to the DMRE80H, and pushed record on the DVD. It played fine on the monitor, and recorded SOMETHING. But the disc was not playable on anything but the DMRE80H, and that was messed up...froze towards the end, using GO4 DVD-R discs. It seems this SHOULD work fine, but obviously my results say different. Can't this be done? Do I have setting set incorrectly? Anybody help me?
