I too am a newbie...(Damn....i hate being a newbie) and am having some major problems.

I have done seraches and can't find the right answers

I am trying to use DVD Shrink along with Nero 6.6.0.1 ( Demo Version at this point) I believe that I have succesfully ripped the DVD using DVD Shrink. I am running into problems whil trying to burn with Nero. My burner is NEC 3100 from Dell. I have flashed it to a NEC 3500 which is supposed to allow for writing DVD-R from my understanding. (Is it possbible I have the wrong flash?)

I have tried two diferent disks. The first was a memorex and now trying to use TDK 4x. Nero runs through it's test speed phase and then when it trys to burn i get several messages including:

Illiegal Disc
Could not perform start of Disc-at-once
Burn Process failed at 2.4x

It appears that it is not burning at all for some reason that I can't figure out and I'm hoping one of you will be able to pick it out in several seconds what that problem is (besides the user)

Thanks for your help...Here is the log

Hey Todd,

Let me preface this by saying that Nero logs are not my thing...but my untrained eye says...

Can you burn CDs on this drive?? It looks like it thinks your NEC is a DVD-ROM, not a burner.

I don't know about the flashing of the NEC (I'm a Pioneer boy)...but you may have messed up the drive.

Did it work with +R before you flashed it? Does it work with +R media now?

Do you have another burning program to try?

Adder.

Adder01... because Adder was taken.

Search...search...search...the forum.

>>>Yes, just tried this and it did work

I don't know about the flashing of the NEC (I'm a Pioneer boy)...but you may have messed up the drive.

>>>I'm assuming it works after the flash since it did burn CDRs ok. I was told I had told I had to flash in order to burn -r

Did it work with +R before you flashed it? Does it work with +R media now?

>>>I've never tried +r because I was told to stay away from them

Do you have another burning program to try?
>>>I have not, I will try something else now

Anyone else have any other thoughts or ideas.

Thanks again....

I too am a newbie. I had the same problem today. I used a version of Nero that I thought could burn DVDs since it had a button to select "DVD". I received a rude laughing message when it failed to burn. The message suggested I get a plug-in. When I went to get the plug-in I noticed a trial version 6.6 ultra. I downloaded the trial version and it worked on a new DVD recordable. The first DVD I used remains unusable. I suspect the Nero software damaged it.

I just bought the 3500 nec drive and it works well. You said .....

My burner is NEC 3100 from Dell. I have flashed it to a NEC 3500 ....

Did you not notice on the nec site there is a warning not to flash your drive with the wrong firmware. Doing so can skrew up your drive.....

Please note ..... right off the download page!!!

"Do not flash with incorrect or unapproved firmware.
Doing so may destroy the DVD drive or reduce its functionally!

The above NEC firmware upgrades should not be used with external USB / FireWire drives or with OEM drives from HP, DELL, Medion, Fujitsu, Siemens, Gateway, or any other OEM manufacturer. If you wish to update the firmware on an OEM drive, please contact the dealer or manufacturer. "

I have used both DVD+R and DVD-R with geart succes. If you get your drive to work with the +R disk go for it as I have found that they are more compatible with most dvd players especialy the older ones.

You can also use DVD Shrink to burn directly from within the program no need to use anything else though it does use Nero Burning rome to do so ..... your should work fine. When you are ripping ..... compressing ..... and burning your movie .....shut down all running apps in your ..... ie e-mail, anti virus etc and do not do anything else while the disk is being made ...... Hope this helps and have fun .... the NEC drive is working great.

I'll state this again. I want to write to DVD-R. My NEC3100 will not do this and I have read in numerous other places that you must flash to NEC3500.

I'm sure NEC is going to recommend not to do this, but there are many people that have done it successfully.

So I still sit here stranded, the reason it probably worked for you is that you have the 3500 drive...I don't

TMC,

I'm getting the exact same error message, looks like it anyway. I bought the 3500A and put it in an external enclosure. The DVDs play no problem, and are encoded fine but once it starts the burning process, there is an error every time. This is my error message,if anyone can help I'd be very appreciative.

me again, ik kind of solved the problem:
-1st rip the dvd with shrink on to your hard disk
(not directly with nero)
-then open Nero and follow instructions of this link:
http://www.dvdshrink.info/nero-video.php

with 1 dvd out of 3 i still had an error when it was allready at the lead out but the copy worked perfect on my dvd-player.

Hope this is the solution on long-term.

Hi Deanbrigs,

Your issue is that you have an External USB recorder, and there is a known issue with this and just about any Recording software you use lately. There is a thread on the SCSI COMMAND ERROR that you can read up on this. Bottom line, upgrade to the Nero 6.6.0.3 and see if this resolves your issue, as we have created a 'patch' to resolve this issue that seems to be either a USB Driver issue, or a chip issue in the Bridge board contained in the external recorders.

Hi Tmcbride,

Your error log indicates an 'illegal disc' and this is reported by the recorder not Nero. As you surmize, only a new firmware upgrade or different brand of media can address this issue. If it happend with any type of media, I would suspect the recorders heads needed cleaning.

Hello, I too have the Nec 3500AG (external)...I have tried using Nero 6.6.0.3. My problem may be slightly different but similar. I am able to make CDs and DVD single layer, but not DUAL LAYER. Running Nero gives me the "could not perform start of Disc-at-once" message. I suspect this has something to do with the external drive issue. Unfortunately, NEC's website states not to update the firmware with it's update for external drives. So what the hell am I gonna do now? Take a chance on a 3rd party firmware update that could jack my drive up for good? Any other ideas guys?

I have exactly the same problem. I tried to burn the same media using Nero 6.6.0.3 first with NEC 3500 AG, FireWire external (Lacie enclosure)- the burning process did not start (unable to start Dics-at-Once, if I remember well), than I tried the same with built-in Pioneer DVD RW DL burner (Asus W 1779 laptop). The disk went well, except Nero could not write Disc-at-once Lead-out, so I can watch the movie, but from chapter 15 up it stops, if I want to jump the scene, so it looks like damaged and not finished properly. I also tried Roxio Creator Classic - same result. The media is TraxData - the only media I could find here, at the moment...

JurajB.... I solved the problem after messing around for about 2 or 3 hours. Since NEC states not to update to 2.18 firmware using an external enclosure and, although it may work okay, we wouldn't want to jeopardize the drive any, we need to improvise. Remove the external enclosure, revealing the IDE cable and power cable. Now plug it straight into an IDE channel, turning it into an internal drive only temporarily. I used Liggy and Dee's firmware version 1.4 and once it flashed....my problems went away!!! RiData DVDs can now be burned. I guess in the end it wasn't a matter of not being able to burn DL DVDs, but just RiData in particular and because those were the only ones I had to test, I wasn't able to troubleshoot down to the media compatibility. Now go ahead and try burning the DL DVD, it should work ok. Now replace the external enclosure. I can now copy a DVD straight to another DVD, spared no degrade in quality, bonuses, or extras. FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF worked like a charm in my component DVD player as well as DVD-ROM on my computer.

All I have to do now is sit back and wait for DL media prices to drop. Armed with DVD Decrypter I'm fu%@in' stoked.

Hi there juraj, welcome to aD,

I can't find what media you're talking about. Do you think you could name it (I promise not to tell anyone.)

I'll start by saying if it's Memorex, try some other media that's not crap. Working with unstable media isn't any a way to find the problem as it could, and very often is, the problem to begin with in and of itself.

I'm trying to figure out what we're dealing with. You tried DVD Shrink doing what ? Ripping ? Analyzing ? Encoding ? - DVD Shrink cannot burn so I know you weren't comparing it with Nero and Roxio..

Now you say you tried to burn data (what data ?) with Nero - Nero express ? Nero Burning ROM ?

You say you have Roxio. Roxio is, IMO, the worst program you can have on your PC if you wish to work with DVD Video. It does it's best to trash almost every other DVD backup proggy there is except DVD Shrink. One extremely good program, Nero, is one that Roxio messes with the most. True there are a very few pple who have them both on their PC BUT by far, the vast majority of pple who have had them both on their PC's have had major headaches and have had to get rid on Roxio as I'm sure your search through our threads have shown you. Even getting rid of Roxio is a problem as it weaves itself all through your system and you require a special proggy to get rid of it even after you've uninstalled it.

Now, that being said, have you at the very least gone into msconfig and shut down every Roxio app before you tried to burn anything, right ?

Let's take the questions, one at a time and when answered we'll at least have some starting point -

Pete

First off who doesn;t use a desktop computer to burn DVD's? Although in DVD Shrink before it encodes it should say "Enable Burning with Nero"

The majority of pple around here use DVD Decrypter to burn, I myself just love CopyToDVD, it's an excellent burner and it "fries" at an awesome speed -

Both of which cannot be used if "enable burning with Nero" is "Checked". Be very careful what you post in the way of "instructions".

To the untrained eye, it looked like you were saying, In order to have DVD Shrink encode, "enable burning with Nero" should be "ticked". Nothing is farther from the truth.

May I am late with a reply but I've had exactly same issue with lite on 451s, it was working fine for almost a year, and I've used memorex dvd-r, one day it went haywire and I've get the same error as you, after couple of days of cursing and searching on the net, I've downloaded new updated firmware from lite on website and everything is working like magic

OK Pete, thanks for your advices. As far as I remember, checked "Enable burning with Nero" in DVD Shrink Preferences worked before - when I used 4,5 GB DVD media, so I meant this if I said, that it did not worked with DVD Shrink when I tried to burn TRAXDATA DVD DL media. I have Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.3. I have the same problem with Toast 6.0.7 on my Powerbook, so I do not think, that this is matter of software. Thanks for any other advices. Juraj.

xxpc210, welcome to aD,

DVD Decrypter is, IMO, the best ripper around - without a doubt, the best around for the money (Lol) it's FREE !

Use it rip a DVD in either the "File" MODE or in the "ISO" Read MODE.

Once you determine that the files are less then 4.36GB, whether because it's a DVD-5 disc OR after it has been compressed by DVD Shrink (Or any other app) you can burn it as an ISO image by using MODE, ISO, Write.

A handy application for FREE -

And, here it is - Download DVD Decrypter and rip a DVD with that. After backing up more than 800 DVD's, I haven't encountered a single instance where DVD Decrypter failed to do the job. :D)

http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

Before you use it - I'd like you to check your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.1.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove IFO/BUP PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO, Read Mode", "tick" "Remove IFO/BUP PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This is an excellent setting for dealing with lightly scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.

Under "Mode" we have a choice of either File or ISO Read to rip our DVD. The main page S/B self explanatory - Now, go rip our happy heart out - :)

Take it out for a "spin" around the block, Check under the hood, Kick the tires and climb inside and smell that "New DVD Decrypter" "smell". Go home, talk it over with the wife and, if you feel in the morning the way you do now, come back and I'll put you behind the wheel of a Brand new DVD Decrypter at a price so low, you'll think it was free. Huuummm, come to think about it, it is FREE - Well, What are you waiting for ?

Remember to stop back and tell me how you feel about it once you've put some "mileage" on it -

Cheers,

Some people like ripping with DVD Decrypter using the "File" "Mode" and that's just fine BUT, especially for episodel-type DVD's, I feel that nothing can beat ripping the DVD using the "ISO", "Read" "Mode". When you're done ripping in the "ISO" Mode, open DVD Shrink go to File", "Open Disc Image " to locate your ISO image - after allowing DVD Shrink to load up the image, just process it as usual then burn to disc using your burner of choice.

HINT: If you are going to burn with DVD Decrypter, DON'T FORGET TO - go back to DVD Decrypter after ripping, to reset the "Mode" from "ISO - Read" to "ISO - Write".

Remember, before trying to backup a DVD on your own, find a guide and use it ?

Here's one of mine ? LQQk about ½ down the page, you'll see it there ?

BTW I have got firmware 2.08 from Support Technique France - Contact : www.lacie.com/fr/support/request. Lacie is a name of external enclosure in which is NEC 3500 AG DVD RW DL burner implemented. I bought it 2 weeks ago. It was quite expensive (200 euros). I run the utility to flash the firmware, it crashed, so now I would like to thank all of you for your inputs, I quit, because the burner is gone.... Merry Christmas and do not believe to authorized support :((
