If you are talking about the PSTwo, the only real mod option you have is a Modchip at present. Although there are reports of mod chips killing the laser Extremly fast in the PSTwo. For the moment, i would stick with the old style PS2, as all the mods are Well tried and tested.
This is only my opinion though

regrading the PSTWO, i've read that there is a major design flaw in which, with or without a chip, the laser's are going pretty fast.

The new ps2 will play burned ps2 games with the swap magic just like the previous ps2 without any modchip or warranty void.

The Matrix team have devised a solution for the PSTwo laser burning problem. All details can be found here:
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=laserv12

Does anyone know if this problem is only due to the Matrix chip or is it the PSTwo in general?

It is the actual Pstwo system to be honest.I was reading up on why it was shorting out the laser units,and it seems that they are manufactured wrong.They work fine for Sony when they test them,but what they don't know is that some chips are missing from the pstwo units.It was the same flaw as the V9 and V10 consoles had,which was solved by doing the Romeo mod.The fix for the Matrix infinity envolves diodes to fix it.I seen a better solution for it,but they are not selling it at the moment.I think they are still producing the product which was a MFD board with the diodes already on it.You will have to solder it to a certain spot on the PS2 in order to fix the laser burnouts.

trust me fellas. If you go about it the correct way there is no problems with the ps2 later on. I have had my ps2 for 2 weeks with no problems and i didnot follow everyone elses way to play the disc. I made my own way.

@L-Burna
Thats the info L-Burna. Seems like on the Crystal forum, some people recommend getting the mod with the fix as well.

@lxhotboy
Play the disc? You talking about playing backed up games or originals? I've had my PSTwo (unmodded) for 3 weeks now and no problems either, but I havent done anything intense like watch a DVD or play hours on end.

I was speaking of playing the backups.
What is the method of playing the backup disc that everyone keep saying will mess up the PStwo. Is it when they take the system apart to gain access to tape down the sensors inside? I did not do that. When you open your pstwo lid there is a square hole in the front right corner. I placed a small piece of eraser in the square hole and slowly close the lid to the point where the disc begins to first spin. Then i applied a small piece of transparent tape to hold the lid at that point. The door should not be fully closed for this to work. There will still be enough space to put in the swap magic and then swap out to the backup game. Tricky part is actually changing the disc out with the small amount of space you have to work with and not scratching it in the process. I have gotten pretty good at it with practice though. Anyone want an actual pic of the way your pstwo should look when using this method can just email me at lxhotboy@yahoo.com and i will be glad to help out.

Nice. Havent read this one in particular on the forum yet, but has the same idea as the others - both sensors have to be down. So the PS2 doesnt lock up afterwards?

Although it does seem like a pain with the disc swapping. Need dexterious fingers =P

i use a pair of thin tweezers and wrap a small amount of tissue around the edge of the disc to prevent any scratches when removing and swapping the disc and a butter knife to press down around the center of the disc so that it locks down onto the spindle. At first it wasnot easy. You just have find a way that is comfortable to you swapping the disc. It took me a while to figure out what i would use myself but now i am swapping like a pro with no scratching of disc. Just takes a little practice.

i bought a premodded new ps2 couple weeks ago, but the damm laser melted in about 5 seconds. i got refundend with a new one, but the guy who sold it me said that there might be a 50/50 probability that the laser would melt again. Is there a way to avoid it?

Which version of the PS2 did you get? If its a V9 or V10 then it suffers from the 'V9/V10 laser syndrome' or something of the like. You can do the Romeo mod where by reducing the voltage to the laser and increasing its lifetime. Details can be found here: http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserV9.htm

@dvdps2
If you're sure you can get a refund then go ahead. Otherwise there are too many rumours going about with the cause of the burn out problem and its too early for a absolute fix since some have reported that even with the fix they get burn outs (again more rumours). Maybe wait like a month or so ...

Mine just burnt out, only had ir for 24 days only used the staw mod and swap magic. Never opened it at all. I am sending it back to Sony and they better fix it good. I am tired of this crap. I hope you all are writing letters to them telling them, how crappy these things are. I had no problems at all with mine when all of a sudden I smelled a burning smell and sure enough the laser was burnt. Its not reading a thing. THIS STINKS!!!
