Hey everyone. I am very new to the PS2 mod scene but am intrigued by the possibility of booting and playing games from a hard drive (ala xbox). I would do it in a heartbeat. I have a v1 PS2.
I am pasting an article from last week by someone who was answered by IM, I think. Could someone please answer these questions in the thread? Thanks for your help on this.

i'm new here and i dont know nothing about ps2 hard drive. i have a couple of questions maybe u guys can help me
1 - do i need a modchip in order to install a HD?
2 - can i go to any computer store and buy any HD or do i need to buy a HD designed just for the ps2?
3 - where can i find a how to install guide?
1. you need a sony ps2 network adapter
2. any hd will work, 120gigs is a good size and maxtor are the most compatible (western digital wont work)
3. you need to buy hd advance http://www.hdadvance.com 4. you don't need a mod
Thanks Sly. HDAdvances' FAQ says that you need to have one of there discs inserted in order to boot and see the drive. Is there any way around this using a mod? Can this setup with HDAdvance work with backups as well as regular PS2 discs?
Thanks again for the help. I really want to MAX out this thing and get the most options available today. This is why I am thinking of the mod chip but don't know enough about it on the PS2 to make an informed decision. This is why I was looking for a good source for an install guide and anything else I may need to read first.
Yeah, it works for originals and backups (they should give you a slide card with your order). Yes, to use the hd, you have to load the hd advance first every time.
