Burned DVD-R and incompatibility

I have a lot of movies burned onto DVD-R. They play perfectly on my Pioneer set top player and on my computers Samsung DVD burner and LG DVD/CD rom. My friends Emerson DVD player will recognize most of them but are badly out of sync. They also play fine on another friends player. I don't understand this. If someone could please explain this to me.
