So what is the best media to use for ps2 backups dvd-r or dvd+r. and what brand of disks are the best to use?

Dvd-r memorex. I would try both dvd-r and +r,because every ps2 is different.

it depends on what your ps2 can handle it may not Verbatim or memoexy
