Hey Scubapete, nice guide. But now that I have dual or double layer burner and media where I can get a guide that tells how to make an exact backup of the original. Without deleting extras. Any help will be appreciated.

restgarc,

Most apps now support DL or DVD 9. Just enter DVD 9 or 8.1 in your DVD size in the app and it will automatically adjust to support that media. There will be no compression unless it goes over that amt. You can include everything with no editing.

For example, in shrink go to edit > preferences > in the drop down menu choose DVD 9 (8.5g) and you're good to go for dual layer.

Have you tried writing to your HDD 1st and seeing if the files work on your PC? In fact if you haven't deleted them yet you can check the temp files from shrink on your PC's software player..

Also, have you tried the disc in another player?

BTW, what's your media and what's your burner?

1- Yes. I used Power DVD v. 4.0 and it can play it from the hard disk and from the DVD.
2- Yes. An X-Box.
3- The media is Ridata double layer 2.4X And the burner is a Plextor PX-716A. The PX-716A burned it at 4X. I try one at 2.4X with the same result.

It seems to me that you have a few "extra" steps in your process. For example, you are using Shrink to analyse a disc that has already been decrypted with Decrypter. That is not really needed.

Somewhere in the process the Video files are going out of compliance with the DVD Specifications. DVD players need to have a DVD-Video compliant structure to operate properly, your PC's media player does not. Bringing the image into Shrink is disturbing the .ifo structure and so the menus don't work right. I can't tell you specifically what is wrong but that's what I suspect.

I would suggest that you use Decrypter only. Use the ISO Read mode, then put in your blank DVD-9 and use the ISO Write mode. It should be that simple.

Hey frank, long time no talk!! :>)

restgarc,

It is true there is no need to run it thru another app since compression is probably not needed and Decrypter can write ISO files. Just use the ISO read and write function. Also, in addition to what frank said I can also tell you that you should be burning at 2x or even 1x, in fact I didn't think Ridata had 4x DL media, I thought 2.4x was as fast as it went. I can tell you that slower is better, especially with DL media.

Also the Plextor 716 and the Ridata DL media are not a good match. I have the PX 716 and it works much better with Verbatim DL media. I would get 2 out of 3 coasters with the Ridata DL media(or worse), while 9 out of 10 work with the Verbatim DL media.

One other thing, game consoles like X Box and PS2 are not a good player, especially for testing, they do not play DL media well, if fact some(depending on what version you have) won't play them at all.

If you decide to use Decrypter alone, use the MDS file to burn with.

First many thanks to Bigorange and Fasfrank for your replies. I did'nt know that you can burn a DVD with Decripter. I'm going to follow your suggestions. But I'm in trouble now that DVD Decripter Home page and forum no longer exist. I confused with Bigorange suggestion to use the MDS file to burn with. Please excuse my ignorance. And by the way the Ridata media I have is 2.4X is the Plextor that burns it at 4X.

Decrypter will burn, but only ISO files. And it won't compress. What frank is tellling you is since you don't need compression you can burn with decrypter.

When you use Decrypter in ISO read mode it will give you 2 files. The ISO file and the MDS file. Create a folder on your HDD and choose that folder for Decrypter to write to. Use the MDS file when you go to ISO write mode.

YOu can download Decrypter right here in AD.

Absolutely!
Even though Decrypter is offically gone, it still works great. Lots of support is available right here.

Once you get it downloaded, open it, and go to Mode -> ISO ->ISO Write. Look in the lower right corner and you can set the write speed.

You don't need to do this until you get ready to burn, after completing the ISO Read process. If I'm not mistaken, Decrypter should detect the correct read speed and set it automatically. You do need to have your blank media in the burner for this to work. At any rate, if it does not detect and set the correct speed, this is where you set it.

Howdy Big Orange!

Howdy back at ya frank! :>) BTW, the site looks great!!!

Since you're using DL media I would set the write speed (where frank is talking about) at 2x. In fact if I'm doing games I set it at 1x. Slower burn = better burn. They haven't refined DL to point they have Dvd5. That's why it only comes in 2.4x whereas Dvd5 comes in 16x! BTW, I NEVER burn over 4x no matter what I'm using.

Guys I followed your directions and got the first good backup. I used the Ridata media although you suggest is not a good one. Also from another forum found out about a compatibility issue between DVD Shrink and Panasonic DVD player "Do not use DVD Shrink. There is a problem how it rips DL discs. That is why it will not play passed DVD Menu. All Panasonic players behave the same if you use DVD Shrink. Use DVD Decrypter and DL discs will play perfectly."

Although were do you buy the Verbatim media?

There's nothing at all wrong with RiData. I've got several hundred burns on it and its quality is up there with Ritek G04's, G05's and Sony. You'll not go wrong using it.

I use the Ritek Ridata 4x +R all the time. One of my favorite media. Probably have 400 burns with it. However, when it comes to DL media I have much more consistent burns using Verbatim DL 2.4x. That's with the Plextor 716 UF DL burner..

BTW, since you don't need shrink unless it goes over 8.5g you shouldn't have problems using Decrypter with your Panasonic Player. I have always warned people against Panasonic DVD players because they are the least compatibleout there. Try the new Philips DVP 642 at 58.00 and plays all formats including divx and mpeg.

I buy my verbatim DL's here, if you watch for sales you can get 'em for less than 7.00 each:

intodabox,

Any particular reason you are using smart ripper? If you're new to DVD you might want to crawl before you walk. It is an excellent editing tool but not for beginners IMHO.

Why not start out with Shrink and Decrypter? Both free and can be got here in AD. And you can still edit with Shrink.

Hi intodabox, welcome to aD,

Give this a try,

a guide for DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter Full Backup
Let's go get one of your favorite DVD's and make a copy of it so should something unforeseen happen like an ice flow hitting the Mojave Desert and freezing the original, you'll have a backup of it -

Here we go, step by step - it can't fail, "Uncle" ScubaPete's can't miss "We're going ta burn a DVD backup right now, youngin's'" Guide to backing up :P).

First create a folder for your HD backup. . This is the place on your HD where DVD Shrink will work on your movie files and DVD Decrypter can pick them up to burn to disc. Try to put it someplace where you won't forget it (i.e. C:\All DVD Work\ Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management").

Next download DVD Decrypter and under Mode select "ISO", "Write". Un-tick the box that says "Verify". Where it says, "Source", you'll leave that blank as DVD Decrypter will find the location of your backed up DVD file automatically. Lastly, where it says "Destination", select the drive where your burner resides. Feel free to close DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink will open it when it needs it.

Here's the link for the newest DVD Decrypter -
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...

Download DVD Shrink. Open it and click "Edit", then click "Preferences" on this page we're going to select "DVD Target Size" as "Custom" and set the size between "4300" and "4360MB" - we do this to make sure that we don't write too close to the edge of the disc. Then under the "File I/O" tab un-tick "Enable burning with Nero" then click "OK"

Here's the link for the newest DVD Shrink -
http://www.dvdshrink.org/

Now you can place your original DVD in your DVD-ROM drive and a DVD blank in your burner's drive (If you have two drives). If you only have the one drive, put your original in that drive now. When the time comes for you to put in your blank in either the drive door will open OR a message will appear. As for your DVD blank media, THIS IS IMPORTANT. Poor quality DVD blanks are responsible for a host of copying errors and hence, failures. Look for a thread dealing with backup media where we'll discuss DVD media in depth. But for now, PLEASE acquire some of the following. Recommended media for use with this Beginner's guide. Quality media would be Sony, Phillips, HP, TDK, Ritek G04, Verbatim "DataLife", Verbatim DataLife "Plus", Ridata, any media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO", Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi are excellent bets.. - As I mentioned, we'll go into more on proper media in another thread.. This might be a good time to use a DVD RW. We won't use them regularly because for 1, many DVD players don't play them and 2, they cost too much (Lol). We do want to use them because if we make a mistake, it won't cost us a disc. When we get our steps down we'll then switch to our single-write media.

Now let's burn a DVD, OK ? Kweel ! Alright then, let's open DVD Shrink and "click' "Open Disk". We'll have to wait anywhere from 30-seconds to a minute for DVD Shrink to analyze (rip) your DVD. If you wish, we can edit your movie now. To trim some unnecessary items from your movie, you can "un-tick" some extra audio you don't want like the foreign audio streams, i.e. Klingon, Solarian Cluster Mush OR Eastern Himalayan Yak language selections or the Director's comments (also known as Outer Mongolian). This will result in your DVD requiring less compression and therefore providing you with a better quality picture.
Today we're doing a "Full backup", that's everything on the original disc on your backup. We need to be sure that the "Full Disc" icon is depressed. Don't try to cheer it up and don't worry, it likes being "depressed". There's no problem in doing a "Full backup" as long as we don't see any "Red" on the size bar at the top of your window. If you should see some "Red" on the size bar, simply "Un-tick" any foreign languages, i.e. Klingon, Solarian Mush-mouth, Director's comments or DTS sound boxes until the "Red" disappears. Actually you can "Un-tick" those things anyway, it'll lessen the compression on your backup. (a good thing :) With no "Red" visible on the size bar we just let the "Automatic" (Default) settings alone.
It's now time to select Backup". Take just a second and under "Target Device" go to "Select backup target " once there, select "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter". Now, under "Quality Settings", if it's SPEED you're after, "un-tick" the box which says, "Perform deep analysis" and "un-tick" the box for "Compress the video with high quality adaptive error compensation". This will give you an acceptable DVD backup.
If it's QUALITY you're after and have some extra time to spend, "tick" Perform deep analysis before backup to improve quality" AND "tick" "Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation." There you may adjust quality enhancements. Practicing with the settings can produce even better end products. For a no-frills DVD's like "There's something about Mary" I like Extra Smooth BUT for DVD's with a lot of special effects, I use the Extra Sharp setting. That's for me, you'll have to decide what you like :) If all the boxes are "grayed out" that's OK, it means your DVD is small enough that little will be lost from the original. Good, now click "OK." Finally, where it says "Select target image file", browse till you find your created folder for your backup, C:\All click "Save". That's it ! Click "OK" and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD. DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management and
Let's not use your PC for anything at all while it's working, we don't want to mess things up this late in the game.
When your PC burns DVD's, it requires 100% of your processor to do the job correctly. For now, let's allow your PC to work in peace.

Ms. Computer will let you know when she's finished -

Enjoy your DVD backup.

Hello out there, this is my first post and I will be forever be indebted to the person that can help me fix this problem. For every 2 DVD's (or CD's) I try to burn, only one of them completes sucessfully. I always get an error message like "Reset Occured", and I'll be burning right after a restart so it's not like I've bogged my CPU down. I just saved one of the error logs from Nero after my last failed disc and I'm hoping someone can explain why I get this problem. I just got through reading Page 9 of this thread and going through the steps of checking my firmware, and DMA settings and all that. I even updated my firmware through the Maxell website. Anyways, sorry if I'm rambling. I'm just trying to coevr all the bases.

Chad

You can set shrink up to automatically burn with Nero or Decrypter. So in essense you're only operating one program. Both are free and here in AD.

I didn't realize you were using DL files off the net. You have to convert those files to DVD compliant files before they can be burned to disc. Since you have Nero you can use NeroVision Express(NVE)3 for that.

GO VOLS !

Hi Chad,

You have got to stop using Nero EXpress. - It is attempting to get you to write you to RAM and that you cannot do.

Let's use Nero Burning ROM if you are to continue to use Nero seperatly OR use DVD Shrink and allow it to control Nero "automatically".
For starters, follow this guide -

BURNING WITH NERO CLASSIC
HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop OR your HD. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\\The Last Samurai sings Swami (off key). Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Wizard), trace your path back to "All DVD Work\ \The Last Samurai sings Swami (off key)", you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished, ready to go - -

OK then, is everyone comfy ? Good - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's Step by Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow along EXACTLY - (might even want to PRINT IT OUT, it'll make following easier, don't ya know ?)

In case you're finding Nero's Burning ROM hard to find (sometimes it really is hiding (Lol). Go to "Start", "All Programs", "Nero", "Nero 6 Ultra Edition" and there you'll find "Nero Burning ROM" :)

When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose "DVD". Directly under that click on the "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the "DVD Video" window. In the left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In the "File Browser" screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the "Shift" key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left and release the mouse button.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click "OK" and now, clear the room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she's working - it would be hazardous to your health, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done, she'll let you know ;-))

Enjoy your backup,

Pete
