I was wondering did ps2ownz actually make this one or did they steal this from someone. It can make harddrive possible, but if you compare the speed of the old bigger PS2 system harddrive to the this one.I bet you the harddrive off the older PS2 systems will outrun the external harddrives.Another thing you have to think about is the price of harddrives. It costs more to get an external harddrive than buying one internal.I would rather have the older PS2 system which is better in my opinion.I still feel this way about the new systems.Sony didn't make them better they stripped the system to save money.

Problem is PSTwo doesn't even supported USB2, so it will load at 1MB/s or 1/3 the speed of DVD drive.

"The redesigned PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system (model numbers SCPH-70011CB and SCPH-70012CB) does not support USB 2.0.

I would just like to find out why on earth didnt sony use USB2.0, USB1.0 is way too old and unless they had the forsight to see what use it was going to be used for its pretty dumb. And L-Burna you mentioned that they are copying something thats already been done which is true because a friend of a friend already has one, but im unable to contact him to get the name do you know of the name or possibly where online i could purchase this. Most appreciated thank you.

I think they only did USB1.0 so that they could save money, and plus-- I dont think Sony wants people using harddrives to load games, since they believe it's a "gateway" to piracy or something like that, since the protection is stripped from the disks and then the game is put onto the harddrive. Plus, the PS2 is originally designed by sony so that people can use headsets to talk to people on [like on SOCOM], usb keyboards for gamesharks, mice, etc... USB1.0 works perfectly for these devices, so there really isn't a reason to have it upgraded to USB2.0 [in sony's eyes].

Man, tons of misconceptions here. I hope this can clear the air:

1a) Yes, PS2 SPCH-70011 and SPCH-70012 both don't have USB 2.0. It wasn't to save money. The hardware is the same. The only thing different is the USB 2.0 drivers which are not built into the O/S. There really isn't any savings.

1b) Every device released so far for the U.S. market has been USB 1.1 compatible. Since that is the case, all of Sony's PS2 designed devices will work for it, including 3rd party vendors, there is no strategic gain for including USB 2.0. It really would be for tampering with the system or piracy.

2) There is only one game released in the U.S. that requires a hard drive, FFXI. There are many games in Japan that use the hard drive. *wishing I were there right now*

3) Network Drives should work if you know how to interface with them.

So, at least for the U.S. market, enabling USB 2.0 and/or installing a hard drive really has no purpose since the SPCH-50000 U.S. series did not use these features as much as anticipated. Anyone that is griping about those lost features must have or is thinking about using thier PS2 for "other" reasons. The 70000 series really isn't limiting you to anything but FFXI. So, if you're not playing FFXI then you don't have much to complain about. I have both 70000 and 50000 series and I'm very happy with them.

Sorry if I sound very snippy but I really just want you all to see Sony's view point.

P.S. There was a USB 1.0 but it was very, VERY short lived.

well socom is a gay game anyway in my opinion, and besides, with the gay PSTwo not having a hd port like v1-11's do, then how else would people download the maps? I'm sure u wouldn't need to have maps on the hd, just download 'em online and burn to disk maybe?

I heard somewhere in the PS2 rumor mill that Sony is planning to release new memory cards for the PSTwo with capacities in the 128MB to 512MB range to accomodate games that where HDD enabled for purposes such as downloading new maps, game enhancements, etc.

PS2 - v8
Mod - Magic V
Burner - CenDyne (Pioneer) DVR-A05
Media - Anything Cheap

Gamecube w/Broadband Adapter
Phantasy Star Online
Animal Crossing Loader v1.4
Phantasy Star Uploader v1.1
Gamecube ISO Ripping Server v1.0.0.29

Jack, yeah, just recapped on what you said as well as added some extra stuff.

I think those rumors about high capacity memory cards has a good chance of being true. If you notice on the front of the PSTwo it shows the logo for MagicGate. For all of you that don't know MagicGate is the security technology used on Sony's Memory Stick Pros and Pro Duos. Also, there may be the advent of a Memory Stick to Memory Card converter.

Flash media has already gotten to the point of 1gig sticks and even 2gig (WAY too costly though atm).

According to Rumours/Fact Sony Computer Entertainment arent going to release a new memory "card" itself however incorporate "Magic Gate Memory Stick" technology in the new Play Station 3. Therefore the Currently available Sony Memory Stick will also then work in the Play Station 3 and Up and yes the current Play Stations are Magic Gate already, however they dont allow for Standard Sony Memory Sticks. Only the PS2 / PS branded Memory Cards. With the possibility of Having not only PS3 Save Games on the "Sticks" but also Pictures (JPEG) as already seen on Most new DVD Players these days, Mp3's, Etc etc. Hope this sheds some light on the topic. Merry Christmas All!
