I own a Plextor PX-708A. I have been using it to copy some movies. However it is extremely slow. I have installed the latest firmware upgrade from Plextor with no improvement. I have checked the IDE controllers, and are set on "DMA, if available". I dowloaded the hacked firmware from the Dangerous Brothers but it did not worked. Can somebody help me to correct the problem? Can I use a cheap DVD ROM and them burning the movie with the Plextor to speed up the process? How would be the process then using DVD shrink 3.2?
I am using DVD shrink 3.2. I have used with and without the "Deep analysis" and "error compensation" feature with I set it in maximum smoothness.
I will greatly appreciate your help.

I don't mean to question your expertise in this matter but do you think you might tell us just how slow your process has become and perhaps what kind of PC you're working with ?

Actually, it should always read that. If you were to read just a little bit farther, it would say that "transfer mode" and then it will say, "PIO", UDMA" or "DMA-4". Can you tell us what your current transfer mode is ?

Were you planing on doing anything else about your firmware ?
Not to be "pushy" but here's a suggestion - Check on your current Firmware with a frimware tool - At the bottom of the page look for "What's my firmware? - Try this little tool I found," Download this tool and check out your Firmware's health (up-to-date wise). You can probably get a current upgrade there also -

Always check your burner's Mfgr's "Support" section to see if some newer Firmware is there -

Now we need to see if we have a working ASPI Layer.
"Yea right, and ASPI stands for Another Stupid Piece of Insanity, right ?" No, not quite, it stands for "Advanced SCSI Programming Interface". "Well that tells me nothing, what's it do ?" That's a much easier question to answer. It is kind of a "translator" allowing your software to talk your hardware in a manner that your hardware will understand. Let's imagine an Earthman trying to talk to a rock. Now, think of a sledgehammer as being the interface. With the interface in play, the Earthman can tell the rock to disperse into gravel no matter what planet the rock is from, OK ? Good, let's see if we have a sledgehammer -
2. Check for your ASPI Layer. If one isn't present, we'll need to get one and reinstall it, then reboot our PC to allow it to "settle in".

Definitely I'm a novice. My burner is reading between 700 to 1,100 kB/s. My PC description is as follows:
AMD Athlon XP
1.35 GHz
512 mb RAM
200 GB Hard drive
Firware:
I have version 1.08 which is the latest from Plextor.
I have the secondary IDE controller current transfer mode set in PIO in device 1, however I cannot change it.Any hints? I don't understand what is device 0 and device 1.
I already downloaded the Force ASPI layer 1.8
I tried today and it is not working.
Pete, I will appreciate your help. Thanks for your advice.

Well we found your problem didn't we -
Back you to Device Manager, to your IDE controller and uninstall your drive, "OK" out of everything. Reboot your PC and let it find your drive. When your PC reinstalls your drive, it will be set by default to DMA and your speed will pickup dramatically -

Pete,
I uninstalled the drive, rebooted and it did not work. Then I use a jumper to force the Muti word DMA, and it did not work either. Finally I put the drive as slave and it's working in Ultra DMA Mode 2. I test it last and the speed for both burning and reading went up drastically.
We finally got it. I appreciate all your jelp, Pete.

All I can say is, WOW ! ! !
Everytime I've seen before, we've set the burner as the primary on your secondary IDE cable in order to have it run well BUT, as they say, "Whatever floats your Boat."
Iffin it's a-working for you, do not mess with it - let it alone -
The main thing is, you're working - That and only that is the important thing - CONGRATS ! !
We're glad that your problem has been solved.
Let's not think about saying "Goodbye" just yet -
