how hard is it to install a modchip?

I recently bought a used ps2 (ntsc version 7) and today i ordered a dms4 lite, i am planning on installing this myself, or getting my dad to do it. I'm no master solder guy, but i can solder like guitar cables and what not, will i have trouble and mess up my ps2, or is it easy and there is hope if i miss up a connection or something. i'm use to messing with computers and what not (not mother boards though) and i'm a fast learner.... also my dasd is an engineer, and i'm pretty sure he could do it, we have your typical old soldering iron, will that work fine, or do we need something else? what are your suggestions on the must haves and essentials for installing a chip. also, i read that after i install the dms4, i will have to do some 'flashing' does that just mean update the bios by loading a cd?

Well i suggest that u strt practising on those computer motherboards because the ps2 motherboard has some very small points where you have to solder. Also i suggest getting a 15W soldering iron, no-corrosive flux, de-solder braid, and a 0.1mm iron tip. As well as 30 AWG kynar wire and 22 AWG wire for the ground and 3v3 connections.

I fitted a Matrix Infinity into my PAL v9. Though I had previous soldering experience, this was the first time I soldered a circuit board, and the PS2 one has tiny connections that you struggle to see properly without some sort of magnification. I was successful although it was third time lucky, the first two times because I tried fitting it without the correct tools and materials. The most important thing is follow the guides careful and use the reccomended tools and materials. Try to find an example picture of an installation to follow so that you know where to put the chip and where to run the wires, try looking here http://www.norcalmods.com/
As long as your confident at soldering and your extra careful, then go for it. But check, double check then get your dad to check all your connections with a magnifying glass before you power up.

I tried soldering a mod chip in my PS2 (US V9) and now it's a 5 pound paper weight. The soldering points are VERY VERY small. Like bboy_flex said, you better practice before you even consider starting. It is nothing like soldering guitar wires. I wish you luck!

It all depends on what kind of chip uir getting. Ur getting the dms4 lite rite, doesnt that come already preflashed? If not then its easy just go to the website that makes the modchip and download the latest firmware. The steps will be on the website telling you how to flash your chip. Most often its just buring the image to a cd and then loading it on your ps2 and flashing it like that. Dont worry about flashing, thats the easy part, you should really be focusing on the soldering instead.

If you really wanna know how hard it is to mod a chip (especially the DMS 4) then just know that you definetely do need a .9 mm solder with the 30 awg wires and the 22 awg wires as said before. I just (within the hour) messed up my whoel ps2. I just finished ordering the new one. All I know is I'm paying modchipman.com to wire in my new mod chip to my new ps2 and that's it. Settle on with the swap magic disc trust me.

Do yourself a favour the Magic 3+ Chips come with Magic Kit, Mate makes em a breeze. 15w Soldering iron and the Magic Package and your set.

If You a newbie You should probably start off with a more simpler mod chip. The DMS4 is a complex modchip You just can solder the points and be done. You need to understand about high frequency chips, also where to route the wires because th wires on th DMS4 can't pass over big chips or stay all bunched up.
