Booting HD loader on a virgin PS2

Is it possible to boot a copy HD Loader into a non-modded ps2? I know there is a cracked version of HD loader floating somewhere out there, and is it cracked so a non-modded ps2 can boot it regularly? I've heard both sides saying it can and can't. Whats the verdict PS2 gurus?

If you buy the real hdloader or advance it will work in a non modded ps2.
If you get a downloaded or cracked version you will only be able to use it if you have a mod chip or swap magic discs.
