I've used a demo of DVD remaster but it was excruciatingly slow. Someone suggested Pro-cut or something like that.
Thank you, oh pundits.

The two main apps are

dvd2oneX
dvdremaster

Both have their advantages.

I'm just starting to use remaster for whole disc copies. It
worked AWESOME on spiderman 2. The video quality was
stellar. I used the m2vdownsizer which recompresses the
original video. It takes a LONG time. After working for
several hours my g4/400 still had 18 hours to go. So I bailed
on that. BUT my dual G5/2GHZ crunched it in 4 hours.

If you don't want to spend that long and/or want some other
options like: movie only, join, subtitles etc then dvd2onex is
your app.

Thank you.
I have tried a demo of DVDremaster but it was excruciatingly slow. So I opted for DVD2oneX
which is like hundred times faster.

For the record - I compared DVD2OneX with roxio popcorn and hands down DVD2OneX was twice as fast compressing - 26 minutes versus 51 minutes in popcorn. The only thing about popcorn is that it's a single click to do both compressing and cutting.

Well if it took 51 mins then it really isn't all that much quicker since it was also extracting.

no, actually you have to FIRST spend 23 minutes with MacRipper DeCSS, then you point popcorn to the VIDEO_TS folder of unencrypted VOB's on your hard disk and tell it if you want the whole disc or just the Main Feature then it compresses and then cuts in one click. Popcorn 100% does NOT work with encrypted files and unlike DVD43 on PC's you must do MacRipper by hand first.

Also, even more importantly - I compared the video quality of popcorn to DVD2OneX after compression and there is positively a macroblocking effect in some of the background. DVD2OneX claims it's algorithms are better and it appears they are.

Also, I couldn't find an obvious way to split a movie across two DVD's with zero compression which DVD2OneX will allow because it specifies Titles by Layer. So you can select Layer 1 for disk 1 and layer 2 for disk 2. There's a natural split in the files at the layer break anyway so it seems an easy way to cut it.

so in short - popcorn only saves the extra step of mastering a dvd after compression but at the expense of quality of image.

Very nice post. I'll be holding off on popcorn for now.
