are you trying to open the .d2v file with an encoding program like TMPGenc?
if so i had the same problem that no one could be bothered to answer.
i found out you need a file called DVD2AVI.vfp to be in the same directory as your encoding program (i.e put the DVD2AVI.vfp file in the same folder as TMPGenc files)
hope i aint talking about something completely different!

First of all thanks for the reply! At lease SOMEONE is willing to help!! I first used smartripper to create the VOB files. I then used DVD2AVI to create the .d2v file and the AC3 audio file. I am following the guide posted on afterdawn and the next step is to use VFAPIConvert to create a pseudo-avi. When I click add job using VFAPIConvert that is when I get the error message, and i can't figure out what to do...is there another program I can use?
Thanks again for your help it is greatly apprecciated.

Hi, I had exactly the same problems with VFAPI !and I had all the VOB files in the same directory, so that can't be the problem. When you unpacked the ZIP file for VFAPI did you run the DOS Batch file vifpset that came with the application ? I think this installs a codec you need. Having said that, I did and it hasn't helped. Please let me know if you solve this one cheers.

I had followed posted instructions and without any serious problem got to the final product(!!!), after that I decided to tune it little bit. I erased programs (no VFAPI un-install)and folders and re-installed it. Then I had this VFAPI error I can't fix and now I am thinking something has been changed during the first installation that makes it difficult to re-install it- the VFAPI is no longer asking for .dll file location(?).

Wipe off old VFAPIConvert and DVD2AVI and unzipp them again to a comon directory. Install VFAPI rightclicking vifp setup and start DVD2AVI to make .d2v and AC3 files. Start VFAPI and all WILL be OK!!! And READ readme.txt file of dvd2avi, it requires common directory with VFAPI!!!

I've found the solution.
The following page explains all.
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm At the top of the page he explains that you must get an earlier version of VFAPI if there's a problem. I did this and it works.Just click the link to get it and replace the current version you are using. hope this helps

No, sorry you actually didn't find the real source of the problem, because both old and new versions work properly when DVD2AVI and VFAPI are unzipped to a common directory (DVD2AVI readme.txt file says that on the beginning!)and installed there. Simply moving one to another's directory won't work, you also have to wipe out old *.d2v file and wave file because (I guess)VFAPI has to be told by DVD2AVI about new *.d2v file type it can recognize and configuration setting file is created/changed after DVD2AVI finishes creating *.d2v and wave files. Check it out if you want!

I want to clarify here that I had fixed VFAPI codec problem two days ago and EVERYTHING IS WORKING NOW just fine, but I have an investigative nature so I got to the bottom of this. People are usualy think that they found the reason why it wasn't working without realizing that there was something else which realy did the trick. I checked all the possibilities and what I wrote is correct.

I have found that simple dvd2dvd is the best instructions. If you want them you can email me at bobbyphillippe@hotmail.com they are pretty big instructions with pics of all the setting for each step.
