Hi there,

Doesn't it really suck when it just won't work???

I'm the latest newbie to darken your hallowed doors.

I've just bought a DVD-writer and I'm trying to copy a load of data files onto a DVD+R. The files are around 300MB and 3500MB in total.

During copying, sometimes I get a CRC error on one file, sometimes I don't.

when I try to access the DVD on completion, all the file structure appears there with all the files looking the correct size, but I cannot access them. For example, I open a 1k .txt file and it is empty. I have copied at x8 and x4 speed to the same poor result.

I bought the writer last week from PC World, it is badged as an Empex 16x. I downloaded the latest firmware update when I installed it. I use Nero Express 5.5.10.34 to copy with. My system is XP1800 processor, 256MB memory, running Win2k pro. The media I'm using is branded Philips 8x DVD+R. I originally copied the files off of a DVD-R disc.

All offerings of help gratefully received

Mark

Here's an excerpt from the Nero log file.

And this is with first copying the files from the disc onto your HD, then burning from the HD onto a blank disc?

Email me if I don`t reply to a previously answered post. I`m probably fishing :)

This appears to be part of you problem - you need to enable DMA for your burner.

For more info have a read through this thread:

You might want to edit your Serial Number out of the Nero Log aswell.

The 15..... bit at the top.

OK things are looking better. Thanks for your help.

Firstly I made an image file on my hard disk and cut from there. This worked. Before, some of the files were three subdirectories down, so perhaps beyond the Joliet 64 character limit. This might be a red herring though.

Secondly, I changed to Imation DVD-R media. The image file copied fine, but a lot slower (90mins for 4GB).

Finally, I changed the DMA setting and cut a DVD-R and it wizzed through - 12 minutes!

Excellent, many thanks for your rapid insightful response.
