In the guide, under the headline Cropping, there´s something about the axels having to be multiples of 16. What does this mean? I´ve done one dvd-rip and i think there was some of the film missing on the sides, this could of course just be my mistake but it would be good to know.

It means that both axis, X and Y need to be multiplies of 16, like 32x16, 320x240, etc.. So 322x245 wont do, not even 322x240.

My grade in mathematics was found in a ditch, so I how do I calculate out which resoulutions are multiples of 16?

Yeah, DVD is in MPEG-2, DivX is MPEG-4. And yeah, you will lose frames in slower computers and playback will be jerky.
