modchip.com said that the slide card and swap magic combo were compatible with the new slim ps2...
but how does that work if the slim ps2 doesn't even have a slide track

The slidecard isn't needed. You would probably want to go with the new SwapMagic v3.3

There is also a slight mod you need to do in the ps2 (tape down 2 internal switches). I believe they are working on making a new fliptop lid to do this for you though, if you want to wait for it.
