I dont want to get caught downloading songs. I am on a school lan connection, and several people have already been caught. Nothign serious has hapend all they had to do was erase their hard drive, and sign a paper saying they wouldnt do it again. I have made a bbackup of all my songs but i still dont want to get caught. I have ad-aware, but i dont know if it even helps. What should i do to make my downloading safer? I have herd erase your registry, but i know its hard and dangerous to your comp if you mess it up, any help or guides???? thanks

Um, you will be seen. Cuz there is a dude somewhere who monitors every one's actions in your school. Trust me, there was one in mine.
Best I cd say is get a PC for home if you don't already have one. Or sign up for Itunes and pay, that way they cannot bust you as afterall you would be paying for the tunes.

There is no way to not get caught.
Everything you do on the internet will be logged onto a computer, where the Computer Administrator can have a look at. Its not so much the logs, but some places have a Graph on the ammount of Bandwidth each computer or group of computers are using and so on. If they see megs and megs of data in a short ammount of time, they will come to the conclusion that somebody is downloading, not just surfing the web.
Then they will go to the computer and investigate further nodoubt.

Well if i have napster and i also have ares, how can they determine which one i used to download the song. For instance i pay for a few from napster but download free ones from ares, can they say that i for sure did pay for it using napster?

diggs, I recommend that you try out http://www.allofmp3.com
It's not free, but it is very affordable, as little as 3 to 5 cents a song. The average album price is less than a buck using 192 kbps MP3 compression. Also you con choose multiple formats like MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, AAC format that is native iPod format, along with several lossless formats, and even straight uncompressed wave files. The price is per megabyte downloaded, so and album downloaded at a 128 kbps MP3 or a 64 kbps WMA will be cheap, while downloading uncompressed waves will cost the same as buying the original CD. They will give you 10mb free when you sign on. Also you can even change the file extensions by default on your downloads so it looks like you are downloading text or zip or some other type of files.
Finally, from what I can tell by several legal opinions
that I garnered from reading multiple reviews, this site is completely legal (unless you ask RIAA of course, but even they have never been able to file suit against this company, because it's a Russian site and it pays its royalities to a branch of the Russian government.

Because you are using a School;s Internet connection, it doesnt matter if you paying or not, you are still not allowed to. All the internet traffic is shared through the school and usually comes from the Department of School Education (as its called in Oz)
You are still using the internet connection to download at school, which your not suppose to. So either way, you are still going to get caught eventually by your school for downloading. They wont like take it to the police, they will most likely just delete the files and take away internet privilages or something for a certain ammount of time, or maybe even warn.

I'm not sure which schools you are talking about, but most of the school prohibitions to downloading apply only to P2P, not to downloading from legal sites like iTunes, the new Napster, or All of MP3. They also don't apply to downloading documents, and with allofmp3.com, you can make all of your music downloads look like document files if you need to.

i suggest that u use emule. first of all it downloads slowly and only speed of 28 kbs has been the fastest for me. but it usually downloads at like 3 or 4 kbs. so they couldnt know that you are donwloading something big since it is small amounts at a time.

Yea be careful dude cause most school computers are networked which means they can see anything you do.
eg: windows NT.
