Hi there everyone, first post although I have been reading this forum for the last few days.

I've decided I must get a PS2 for essentially the purposes of playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and the US version asap at that.

I am new to the whole modding scene, but my budget requires a baptism of fire. I am thinking of picking up a faulty PS2 on ebay and fixing it using stuff I've learned from the recent reading. Then buying a fliptop/SD combo from an online store and fitting that and then either grabbing a DL of MGS3 or a pre burned copy to make sure I've done it correctly and then buy the US version. I am well versed in the ins and outs of taking PCs apart as I'm always messing with them, so that should help me.

Now questions:
1) Is that a bit much for a first timer?
2) What are the odds of being able to fix a PS2 which is only having disc read errors on SOME games and not others? (figure its a lens cleaning etc and should be straight forward enough, am I wrong?)
3) What online shops (UK now remember) would be best to grab the fliptop/SD combo from?
4) Are there any good sources for backups with maybe original artwork or whatever? (PM me that please)
5) What are good sites for free repair/installation/cleaning guides?

Thats all I can think to ask right now. Any help/feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

hey film,
i really think that bying the broken PS2 is not a good idea.
You can't just be that avg. joe and just go and fix ps2's.
I bet that a lot of people selling them on ebay or whatever have tried fixing them alreaady.

Just cause its a dre doesn't mean it's the laser that bad.

Oh well I've gone and bought it now so I'll see what happens. Worst case scenario I can resell it on ebay as faulty again for a small loss of money. Worth it just to have a go I feel anyway, sort of a project to keep one busy and such.

Came in the mail today. Popped in GTA3 (dvd PS2) and NHL 2001 (CD PS2) and a DVD movie and got "no data" for all of them. Auction said that the discs sometimes play and sometimes there are disc read errors, but alas "no data" all the time. I searched for no data errors and found http://snake_josh.tripod.com/ps2_laser.htm which didn't fill me with hope. I took the whole thing apart anyway clearing all the dust out of everywhere i could. Cleaned the laser lens and adjusted the cog for laser angle in increments and kept testing. Nothing did the trick so I reckon its a case of a new laser. But I can't be bothered buying it and fitting it because it will be moving onto what I'd pay for a PSTWO in January brand new so I'm gonna resell this on ebay.

Meh to the whole thing quite frankly, dissapointing

No. I'm saying after the £30-£40 for a new laser I'd be as well off buying a new slimline for £95 in January with the warantee.
